Abstract: 2-(5-Nitroimidazol-2-ylvinyl)thiadiazoles of formula (I) are new: (where R1 is 1-4C alkyl opt. substd. by OH; or 1-4C alkoxy; R2 is H or Me; R3 is H, 1-24C alkyl, opt. substd. phenyl or heteroaryl). Specif. (I) are 2-methyl-5- 2-(1-methyl-5-nitroimidazol-2-yl)vinyl -1,3,4-thiadia- zole and its i-ethyl analogue. (I) also have bactericidal activity. A typical cpd. 2-methyl-5-2-(1-methyl-5-nitroimidazol-2-yl)vinyl -1,3,4-thiadia- zole is prepd. in 62% yield by heating a mixt. of 2,5-dimethyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole, 1-methyl-5-nitroimidazole-2-carboxaldehyde and ZnCl2 in acetic acid and acetic anhydride.
