Abstract: (I) is made by brominating 2,5-dimethyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole in the presence of an organic acid. (I) is useful as a flame retardant additive in styrene polymers; as an adhesion promoter; as an intermediate in the prodn. of dyes; and as a phosphorescent marking agent for plastics. The process gives high yields of (I), largely free from dark coloured highly brominated by-prods. which have a deleterious effect on the flame retardant properties of the compsn.

Abstract: 5-Nitrobenzo-1,2-dithiole-3-thione of formula (I) is prepd. by reacting a 2-halo-5-nitrobenzyl halide of formula (II) with sulphur in the presence of a base at 20-100 degrees C, as follows: (where each X is independently halogen). (I) has fungicidal activity and is useful as an intermediate for plant-protection agents, pharmaceuticals and dyes. The process is simple and gives high yields (e.g. 70-90%). The starting material is pref. 2-chloro-5-nitrobenzyl chloride (IIa), which can be prepd. by nitrating 2-chlorobenzyl chloride. The base is pref. a tert. amine or an alkali metal alcoholate. The reaction is pref. effected in an inert solvent, esp. an alcohol or ether.

Abstract: 2-(5-Nitroimidazol-2-ylvinyl)thiadiazoles of formula (I) are new: (where R1 is 1-4C alkyl opt. substd. by OH; or 1-4C alkoxy; R2 is H or Me; R3 is H, 1-24C alkyl, opt. substd. phenyl or heteroaryl). Specif. (I) are 2-methyl-5- 2-(1-methyl-5-nitroimidazol-2-yl)vinyl -1,3,4-thiadia- zole and its i-ethyl analogue. (I) also have bactericidal activity. A typical cpd. 2-methyl-5-2-(1-methyl-5-nitroimidazol-2-yl)vinyl -1,3,4-thiadia- zole is prepd. in 62% yield by heating a mixt. of 2,5-dimethyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole, 1-methyl-5-nitroimidazole-2-carboxaldehyde and ZnCl2 in acetic acid and acetic anhydride.
