    Abstract: A process for the prodn. of (1-4C alkyl) (meth)acrylate esters (AM/AE) from esters of formula (I) and opt. esters of formula (II), in which R = H or Me; R , R = 1-4C alkyl; n = 0 or more. The process comprises reaction in the liq. phase under reduced pressure in presence of acid, with continuous removal of cleavage prods. Also claimed is a process for the prodn. of (AM/AE) by the acid-catalysed esterification of 1-4C alkanols with (meth)acrylic acid, in which by-prods. (I) and (II) are sepd. from the prod. mixt. and subjected to the above cleavage process, and the cleavage prods. are continuously removed and returned to the esterification process.

    Abstract: Method for producing (meth)acrylic acid esters by reacting (meth)acrylic acid with a C4-C12-alkanol in the presence of sulfuric acid or sulfuric acid mono C4-C12-alkyl ester as a catalyst, wherein A) the reaction is carried out in an esterification unit comprising a first reactor and at least one other reactor, B) the first reactor is loaded with a mixture of (meth)acrylic acid, C4-C12-alkanol and a catalyst, said mixture containing no more than 5 wt.% of water in relation to the sum of the starting materials, C) esterification is carried out in the first reactor without removing ester, alkanol or water until (meth)acrylic acid reaction of at least 40 % is obtained, as long as the mixture remains single phase, and D) esterification is continued in at least one other reactor in which the water formed is removed by distillation.
