Abstract: Diesters of olefinically unsaturated 1,2- and/or 1,4-diols are prepared by reacting a conjugated diolefin, oxygen and a fatty acid, in the gas phase or liquid phase, over a solid catalyst which contains palladium and/or platinum and a further metal, which has an atomic number of from 21 to 30, from 39 to 48 or from 57 to 80, but is not a platinum metal, the catalyst having been obtained by reduction of compounds, applied to a carrier, of platinum and/or palladium and the further metal, and heating at 400 DEG C. or above.

Abstract: Prepn. of esters of 1,2-glycols comprises reacting an olefin with O2 and a carboxylic acid in the presence of a catalyst. The catalyst is a cpd. derived from titanic acid and a low-mol. wt. alcohol and/or carboxylic acid. The catalyst is pref. obtd. by reacting Ti (Hal)4 with an aliphatic mono-or poly-ol and/or a carboxylic acid (anhydride) e.g. of formula Ti (OR)m(OAc)n (where R is 1-20C alkyl, m and n = 1-3 each, and Ac is an acyl gp) or Ti (OR')4 (where R' is 1-20C alkyl). Used as intermediates, solvents, plasticisers and surfactants. The esters are formed with high selectivity and at increased rate, avoiding the use of the normal highly corrosive halogenated catalysts.

Abstract: Tetrahydrofuran is prepared from a compound containing butanediol or capable of generating butanediol. The butanediol-donating compound is an ester of butanediol which is reacted with hydrolysis and etherification by passing it downwardly through a distillation column together with an acid catalyst and passing steam upwardly therethrough. The product which distills off is tetrahydrofuran.

Abstract: Propylene oxide is prepared by elimination of acetic acid from propylene glycol monoacetates in the presence of a base. In contrast to the conventional elimination of acetic acid in the gas phase, the present reaction is carried out in the liquid phase in a high-boiling solvent. Because of the smaller reaction space required, the reaction in the liquid phase is simpler.
