Abstract: Process for the preparation of methyl formate by reaction of methanol on copper-containing catalysts at elevated temperature and in the gas phase by using a catalyst containing, apart from 30 to 80% by weight of copper, calculated as CuO, 20 to 70% by weight of magnesium silicates, calculated as MgO plus SiO2 in which the MgO/SiO2 molar ratio is 0.3 to 1.5, and which can be additionally doped with the metals zinc, chromium and/or barium in amounts of, in each case, up to 1.5% by weight, calculated as ZnO, Cr2O3 and BaO.

Abstract: Process for the preparation of dialkyl carbonates of the general formula I in which R represents a C1- to C10-alkyl group, by reacting the alcohols R OH with a gaseous carbon monoxide/oxygen mixture in the presence of a copper catalyst and of a cosolvent, at increased temperature and under increased pressure, in which the cosolvent used is a cyclic urea of the general formula II in which n is the number 2, 3 or 4 and R represents hydrogen or a C1- to C4-alkyl group.
