Abstract: A process is described for preparing sorbitol by catalytic hydrogenation of a monosaccharide forming sorbitol on hydrogenation in the liquid phase, which comprises the catalyst being obtainable by: i) single or multiple treatment of an amorphous silicon dioxide based support material with a halogen-free aqueous solution of a low-molecular-weight ruthenium compound and subsequent drying of the treated support material at below 200° C., ii) reducing the solid obtained in i) with hydrogen at from 100 to 350° C., step ii) being carried out immediately after step i).

Abstract: Providing a ruthenium catalyst for the production of sugar alcohols. Ruthenium catalysts (I) are prepared by: (A) a single or multiple treatment of an amorphous silicon dioxide support material with a halogen free solution of a low mol. wt. ruthenium compound followed by drying at below 200 deg C; (B) reduction of the resulting solid with hydrogen at 100-350 deg C such that step (B) is carried out immediately after step (A). An Independent claim is included for a process for the production of sugar alcohols by catalytic hydrogenation of the corresponding mono- and oligosaccharides in the liquid phase at the heterogeneous catalyst (I), excluding a process for the production of sorbitol.

Abstract: Preparation of polyalcoholates involves the steps: (a) reaction of alcohols with bases with formation of an alcoholate containing mixture, (b) preparation of the mixture in a water-free form, (1c) feeding of the mixture into a rotary reactor, (d) feeding of alkylene oxide into the reactor in a number of sites, (e) reaction of the alcoholate and/or products of reaction. Preparation of polyalcoholates involves the steps: (a) reaction of alcohols with bases with formation of an alcoholate containing mixture; (b) preparation of the mixture in a water-free form; (c) feeding of the mixture into a rotary reactor; (d) feeding of alkylene oxide into the reactor in a number of sites; (e) reaction of the alcoholate and/or products of reaction between the alcoholate and alkylene oxide into the reactor. The steps (a) to (e) are continuous, the reactor is cooled externally, and the reactor is in the form of a plate-type heat exchanger, a plate-type heat exchanger system in a container with vapor cooling, a single way tube type heat exchanger, or a multi-way tube heat exchanger.

Abstract: Production of phthalic anhydride from o-xylene by 2-stage oxidation with recycle of unreacted xylene from the first stage comprises removing toluene from the xylene recycle stream by distillation. Production of phthalic anhydride comprises: (1) partially oxidizing o-xylene in the liquid phase with oxygen or a mixture of oxygen and an inert gas in the presence of a catalyst; (2) distilling the partially oxidized mixture to separate a fraction comprising unreacted xylene; (3) distilling the xylene fraction to remove toluene; (4) recycling the xylene fraction to step (a); and (5) oxidizing the xylene-depleted partially oxidized mixture in the gas phase to produce phthalic anhydride.
