    Abstract: The present invention relates to a novel process for the preparation of Ziegler-Natta catalyst systems containing, as active constituents, a) a titanium-containing solid component which contains titanium, magnesium, halogen and a carboxylic ester and, as cocatalyst, b) an aluminium compound and c) optionally a further electron-donor compound. The invention furthermore relates to Ziegler-Natta catalyst systems obtainable by this process, to the preparation of polymers of propylene with the aid of these catalyst systems, to polymers obtainable by this preparation method, and to films and mouldings made from these polymers.

    Abstract: A novel Phillips catalyst for the homopolymerisation of ethylene and the copolymerisation of ethylene with alpha -olefins contains, as catalytically active components, a specific aluminium phosphate-supported chromium catalyst and cocatalysts of the general formulae I to IV MR M R2 M R 3-nXn MM RR@ (I) (II) (III) (IV> in which the index and variables have the following meanings: M is lithium, sodium or potassium, M is magnesium or zinc, M is boron or aluminium, R is C1- to C10-alkyl or C6- to C20-aryl, R is R or C1- to C10-alkoxy or C6- to C20-aryloxy, X is chlorine, bromine or iodine, N is 0, 1 or 2. The aluminium phosphate-supported chromium catalyst is obtainable by applying chromium compounds to a finely divided aluminium phosphate having a P:Al molar ratio of close or equal to 1 and a pore volume of > 1 cm /g, and activating the resulting intermediate at elevated temperatures in an oxidising atmosphere. The novel Phillips catalyst has an extremely long mean service life, and its productivity can be further increased by adding hydrogen.

    Abstract: Propylene-ethylene copolymers obtainable by two-step polymerisation from the gas phase in an agitated fixed bed by means of a Ziegler-Natta catalyst system containing an aluminium compound as cocatalyst in addition to a titanium-containing solid component, in which, in a first polymerisation step, propylene is polymerised at a pressure of from 20 to 40 bar, a temperature of from 60 to 90 DEG C and a mean residence time of the reaction mixture of from 1 to 5 hours, giving from 0.05 to 2 kg of polypropylene per mmol of the aluminium compound, and subsequently, in a second polymerisation step, a mixture of propylene and ethylene is polymerised onto the polymer discharged from the first polymerisation step, at a pressure of from 5 to 30 bar, this pressure being at least 7 bar below the pressure in the first polymerisation step, a temperature of from 30 to 100 DEG C and a mean residence time of the reaction mixture of from 1 to 5 hours, the ratio between the partial pressures of propylene and ethylene being set in the range from 0.5 : 1 to 5 : 1, and a) the weight ratio between the monomers reacted in the first and second polymerisation steps is set so that it is in the range from 2.5 : 1 to 20 : 1, or b) the polymerisation in the second polymerisation step is carried out in the presence of a C1-C8 alkanol, the weight ratio between the monomers reacted in the first and the second polymerisation steps being from 1 : 1 to 20 : 1. s

    Abstract: Supported catalyst systems are obtained by reacting support materials with organic compounds of alkali, alkaline earth or Main Group III or IV metals in an inert solvent and then reacting the suspension with a metallocene complex and a metallocenium ion-forming compound without removing solvent or isolating the first-stage product. A process for the production of a supported catalyst system comprises (1) reacting an organic or inorganic support material in an inert solvent with a metal compound of formula (I): M (R )r(R )5(R )t(R )u (I) in which: M = an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or a Main Group III or IV metal; R = H, 1-10C alkyl, 6-15C aryl, or alkyl-aryl or aralkyl with 1-10C alkyl and 6-20C aryl groups; R -R = H, halogen, 1-10C alkyl, 6-15C aryl, or alkyl-aryl, aralkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy or dialkylamino (all with 1-10C alkyl and/or 6-20C aryl groups); r = 1-4; s, t, u = 0-3; (r+s+t+u) = the valency of M and then (2) reacting the suspension obtained with a metallocene complex and a metallocenium ion-forming compound, without removing the solvent and without isolating the pretreated support material from stage (1).
