Abstract: Supported catalyst systems are obtained by reacting support materials with organic compounds of alkali, alkaline earth or Main Group III or IV metals in an inert solvent and then reacting the suspension with a metallocene complex and a metallocenium ion-forming compound without removing solvent or isolating the first-stage product. A process for the production of a supported catalyst system comprises (1) reacting an organic or inorganic support material in an inert solvent with a metal compound of formula (I): M (R )r(R )5(R )t(R )u (I) in which: M = an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or a Main Group III or IV metal; R = H, 1-10C alkyl, 6-15C aryl, or alkyl-aryl or aralkyl with 1-10C alkyl and 6-20C aryl groups; R -R = H, halogen, 1-10C alkyl, 6-15C aryl, or alkyl-aryl, aralkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy or dialkylamino (all with 1-10C alkyl and/or 6-20C aryl groups); r = 1-4; s, t, u = 0-3; (r+s+t+u) = the valency of M and then (2) reacting the suspension obtained with a metallocene complex and a metallocenium ion-forming compound, without removing the solvent and without isolating the pretreated support material from stage (1).

Abstract: A catalyst system (I) comprises: (A) a gel form, cross-linked organic support having an average particle diameter of 1-300 microns; (B) a catalyst, appropriate for the polymerization of olefins; and optionally (C) at least one activator compound. Independent claims are included for: (i) a process for the preparation of the catalyst (I) by mixing a swollen, gel-like, cross-linked organic support with a catalyst and optionally an activator at 10-100 deg C, drying the reaction mixture and optionally washing the product with a solvent that does not swell the support; (ii) a process for the polymerization of olefins at 20-300 deg C and 5-400 bar in the presence of the catalyst system (I).

Abstract: A supported catalyst for olefin polymerization comprises a copolymer support, a metallocene complex and a metallocenium ion forming compound. A supported catalyst (I) for olefin polymerization comprises: (A) a support comprising a copolymer containing (A1) monomer units of formula R C(R )H=CH2 (I), (A2) monomer units of formula (II) and (A3) monomer units having polar groups; (B) a metallocene complex and (C) a metallocenium ion forming compound. R = H, 1-4C alkyl or phenyl; R = aryl, optionally substituted, alkyl or alkenyl; A = a chemical bond or a phenylene group, optionally substituted; R -R = H, 1-10C alkyl or phenyl, optionally substituted; and p = 0-8. Independent claims are included for: (i) a process for the production of the catalyst (I) by solution polymerization of the monomer units (A1), (A2) and (A3) to form a copolymer solution followed by addition of (B) and (C); (ii) a process for the polymerization of olefins in the presence of the catalyst (I); and (iii) the copolymer support (A).

Abstract: Preparation of a supported catalyst by production of a copolymer with leaving group-containing comonomer units, polymer like reaction of the copolymer with an optionally substituted cyclopentadiene compound, and reaction of the copolymer with a mono-Cp-metallocene compound is new. A supported catalyst is prepared by: (1) Production of copolymer containing at least the monomer units of formula (I) and (II): A = a direct chemical bond or a group (A); X = H, optionally substituted aryl, optionally branched alkyl, or alkenyl; n = 1-8. (2) The polymer like reaction of the copolymer with a cyclopentadiene compound (III) to give a corresponding copolymer in which some of the exit groups X are substituted by a residue (III'). R -R = H, 1-10C alkyl, optionally substituted phenyl, or the residue group QR R X ; Q = C, CR R C, Ge, or Si, R , R each = H, Me, Et, or Ph, X = halogen, methoxy or ethoxy; and (3) the reaction of the copolymer modified under (2) with a metallocene compound (IV): Cp = optionally substituted cyclopentadienyl, Ti, Zr, or Hf; X = halogen, H, 1-10C alkyl, 1-10C alkoxy or amido, where the various X substituents have different meanings. Independent Claims are included for: (A) A supported metallocene catalyst; (B) a copolymer obtainable as in (1) and (2) above as a support material for metallocene catalysts; (C) a process for the polymerization of ethylene or propylene, or copolymerization of ethylene or propylene with 3-8C alpha-olefins in the presence of a supported metallocene catalyst.
