    Abstract: Core shell (C/S) particles comprises a shell (S) made from film forming material, and a core (C) that is resistant to deformation under the film forming conditions for (S). The core is not swollen or only very slightly swollen by (S), and has a mono-disperse particle size distribution. Materials (C) and (S) have different refractive indices. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) production of the C/S particles by homogenising previously prepared core polymer particles with monomers or prepolymers of the shell polymer in an inert medium, and polymerising the mixture under conditions such that the shell polymer (or precursor) is deposited on the core; (b) production of decorative and/or protective coatings comprises applying the particles or preparations to optionally pretreated substrates, removing any liquid dispersant and/or diluent, forming a film of the shell material, and crosslinking if required, with orientation of the core; and (c) production of effect colours, by applying the particles or preparations to a low adhesion substrate, possibly evaporating any solvent or diluent, converting the shell material into a liquid, soft or viscoelastic matrix phase, orienting the core at least to domains with a regular structure, hardening the shell material to fix the core structure, detaching the hardened film from the substrate and milling to the required particle size (to produce a pigment or powder).

(I) contg. basic cpd(s)., with pH over 7, for negative or positive working light-sensitive offset printing plates based on light-sensitive diazo cpds. contains 0.1-50 g/l (silane(s) of the formula X-(CH2)y-Si(R1)n(OR2)3-n (II), where R1 and R2 are 1-9C alkyl or 6-12C aryl; X is ZO-CO-CHR3-, R4O-CO-CHR3-, ZO-CO-CH=C(COOR5)-, R4O-CO-CH=C(COOR5)-, a 2,5-dioxo-2,5-dihydro-fur-3-yl gp., (R6O)2P(=O)-, (Hal)2P(=O)-, ZO3S-, HalO2S-, ZO3S-Ar- or HalO2S-Ar- gp.; R3 is H, 1-9C alkyl or 1-9C acyl; or the acyl gp. R3 + the HO-CO-=CH= gp. form a carboxylic anhydride ring; R4 and R5 are 1-9C alkyl or 6-12C aryl; R6 is H, 1-9C alkyl or 6-12C aryl; Z is H or an alkali metal; Ar is 6-12C arylene; Hal is Cl or Br; y is 1-4 and n is 0-1. (II) is dissolved in (I) in hydrolysed form, esp. in salt form. More specficially, X is (R6O)2P(=O)-; R2 and R6 are H, 1-9C alkyl or 6-12C aryl; y = 2; and n = 0. In particular, (II) is the K (2-(trihydroxysilyl)ethyl)phosphoante (IIA). ADVANTAGE - The addn. of (II), esp. phosphonic acid silanes, maximises the life of (I), without impariing the reproduction quality and ensures that the developed printing plates run freely in the printing machines and give large editions.
