Abstract: Hydrogen cyanide (hydrocyanic acid) production by dehydration of gaseous formamide in presence of atmospheric oxygen is effected using a catalyst containing metallic iron or iron oxide. An Independent claim is also included for use of ordered packings of steel and iron oxide on an aluminum oxide carrier as catalyst in hydrogen cyanide production by dehydration of gaseous formamide containing atmospheric oxygen.

Abstract: In the preparation of carbonyl compounds (I) by gas phase oxidation of methanol or alcohols with gas containing oxygen (O2) in the presence of catalysts containing copper and/or silver and optionally up to 20 ppm volatile phosphorus compound with respect to the alcohol, the catalyst system (III) consists of a catalyst (IIIA) containing Cu and/or Ag and P and a catalyst (IIIB) free from P. In the preparation of carbonyl compounds of formula (I) by gas phase oxidation of methanol or alcohols of formula (II) with gas containing oxygen (O2) in the presence of catalysts containing copper (Cu) and/or silver (Ag) and optionally up to 20 ppm volatile phosphorus (P) compound with respect to the alcohol, the catalyst system consists of a catalyst containing Cu and/or Ag and P and a catalyst free from P: R = H or 1-3 C alkyl; R = H, 2-4 C alkenyl, optionally mono- to trisubstituted by 1-3 C alkyl, or a group of formula (III); R = H; R = OR ; or R R = O; R = H, 1-8 C alkyl, 2-4 C alkenyl, optionally mono- to trisubstituted by 1-3 C alkyl, cyclohexyl or cyclopentyl; R = 1-4 C alkyl, cyclohexyl, cyclopentyl, -CH2-CHO or -CH2-CH2-O-CH2-CHO; R = H or -OR ; R = H, 1-4 C alkyl, cyclohexyl, cyclopentyl, -CH2-CH2-OH or -CH2-C2-O-CH2-CH2-OH.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing carbonyl compounds of formula (I), in which R1 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical with between 1 and 3 C atoms; R2 is a hydrogen atom or a radical of formula (II) in which R3 is a hydrogen atom or, together with R4, an oxygen atom; R4 is the radical OR6 or, together with R3, an oxygen atom; R5 is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl radical with between 1 and 8 C atoms or a cyclohexyl or cyclopentyl radical; and R6 is an alkyl radical with between 1 and 4 C atoms, a cyclohexyl or cyclopentyl radical or a radical of the formula -CH2-CHO or -CH2-CH2-O-CH2-CHO. According to said method, the carbonyl compounds are produced by gas-phase oxidation of methanol or alcohols of formula (III), in which R1 and R5 have the meaning assigned above and R7 is a hydrogen atom or an OR8 radical, and R8 is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl radical with between 1 and 4 C atoms, a cyclohexyl or cyclopentyl radical or a radical of the formula -CH2-CH2-OH or -CH2-CH2-O-CH2-CH2-OH, with a gas containing oxygen, in the presence of catalysts containing copper and/or silver and a phosphorus compounds which is volatile under reaction conditions, in such a quantity that the quantity of phosphorus (calculated as P) in relation to the part by weight of alcohol used is up to 20 ppm. The method is characterized in that the quantity of phosphorus is added in the catalyst bed.

Abstract: Disclosed is a process for preparing a solution of cyanide salts, comprising the steps of: a) preparing a crude gas comprising hydrocyanic acid by dehydrating formamide up to a formamide conversion of >/= 97 per cent; b) If appropriate, acid-scrubbing the crude gas obtained in step a); and c) subsequently reacting the crude gas obtained in step a) or, if appropriate, in step b) with an aqueous solution of a hydroxide, M(OH)x, where M is selected fro the group consisting of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals and x is dependent upon the oxidation state of M and is 1 or 2.
