Abstract: The invention relates to compounds of the formula in which R and R are halogen atoms and/or Me S groups, where R and R may be identical or different, X is hydrogen, chlorine and/or bromine, Y is sulphoxide, -SO-, and/or sulphone, -SO2-, m is an integer from 2 to 500, n is zero or an integer from 1 to 450, where n + m can be at most 500, with the proviso that the halogen content (from R or R and X) of the compound makes up at least 10 % by weight. These compounds are prepared by reacting compounds of the formula in which R and R are halogen atoms and/or Me S groups, where R and R may be identical or different, X is hydrogen and m is an integer from 2 to 500, with chlorine or bromine in an inert organic solvent or in an aluminium chloride melt, which may contain additives, at elevated temperatures. The compounds of the formula I are used for flameproofing thermoplastics.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of electrically conductive polyaromatics; in which the polyaromatics are treated with 0.5 to 5% by weight of a strong Lewis acid having pks values from -10 to +4, with the exclusion of aqueous moisture and of oxygen, and in which the polyaromatics used are compounds having conjugated pi -systems in which at least two polyene chains of the formula (I) and (II): in which n = 1 to 100 and m = 0 to 50 run in parallel. Suitable polyaromatics are quarterylene, quinquerylene, sesquicylene or dianthracene. The electrically conductive polyaromatics can be used in electrical engineering for the production of solar cells, for the conversion and fixation of radiation, for the preparation of electrical and magnetic switches and electrical memories and for the antistatic finishing of plastics.
