    Abstract: The salts are prepd. by photocopolymsn. of (a) 50 - 90 wt.% 2 - 12C alpha-olefins (b) 20 - 40 wt.% acrylic and/or methacrylic acid and (c) 10 - 20 wt.% 1 - 4C esters, amides or nitriles of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid, 1 - 4C vinyl esters, vinyl halides, maleic anhydride, maleic and/or fumaric acid half esters, and/or half amide and/or 3 - 6C unsatd. alcohols followed by neutralisation with (in)organic bases. Papers of high filler content can be sized and the copolymers are easily worked having K-values of 15 - 30.

    Abstract: Paper size is based on finely-divided aq. dispersions of copolymers (I) obtd. by emulsion copolymerisation of ethylenically unsatd. monomers in the presence of starch. 40-140 (wt.) pts. monomer mixt. of 20-65% (a) (meth)acrylonitrile, (b) 80-35% 3-8C alkyl acrylate and (c) 0-10% other ethylenically unsatd. comonomers are copolymerised in 100 pts. aq. soln. of 2.7-15% degraded starch, with an intrinsic viscosity of 0.04 to under 0.12 dl/g. at 40-100 deg.C in the presence of a peroxide initiator. The monomer mixt. pref. contains (a) acrylonitrile, (b) butyl acrylate(s) and opt. (c) di-1-3C-alkylamino-2-6C-alkyl (meth)acrylate, N-vinylimidazoline and/or N-vinyl-2 methylimidazoline or their quaternisation prods., or styrene, (meth)acrylamide, methacrylate esters and acrylate esters other than those used as (b). The starch is modified by enzymatic and then oxidative degradation to a viscosity of 0.045-0.11 dl/g.

    Abstract: Use of mixtures of (A) emulsions of C14- to C20-dialkylketenes and (B) fine-particulate polymer dispersions which contain copolymerised nitrogen-containing monomers and which are prepared by a two-stage polymerisation, in which, in the first polymerisation stage of the type of a solution copolymerisation, a low-molecular amphoteric prepolymer is prepared and, after dilution with water, nonionic, ethylenically unsaturated monomers are polymerised in this polymer solution in the second polymerisation stage in the manner of an emulsion polymerisation, 0.1 to 20 parts by weight of (B) being used per 1 part by weight of (A) - each relative to the solids content - as a paper size.
