    Abstract: Preparation of an aqueous polymer dispersion comprises polymerization of at least one radical-polymerizable, ethylenically unsaturated monomer in an aqueous system in the presence of a polymerization initiator where the pH of the aqueous system is set by addition of at least two different basic reagents and where at least one of the basic reagents is added more than once. Independent claims are included for: (1) aqueous polymer dispersions obtained using the process; (2) polymer powders obtained by drying the aqueous dispersions; (3) use of the dispersions as auxiliaries or coating materials for solid pharmaceutical dosage forms; and (4) solid pharmaceutical dosage forms containing polymers prepared using the process.

    Abstract: Polymers (I), used in hair styling agents, are prepd. by radical-initiated copolymerisation of: (A) 5-50 wt.% (quat.) 1-vinyl imidazole; (B) 20-80 wt.% N-vinyl caprolactam; (C) 10-60 wt.% N-vinyl pyrrolidone; and (D) 0-30 wt.% additional radical copolymerisable monomer which forms a homopolymer with a Tg > 20 degrees C, with the proviso that the polymer is quaternised if (A) is 1-vinyl imidazole. Cosmetic hair and skin formulations contg. (I) as active ingredients are also claimed. Pref. (A) is 3-methyl-1-vinyl imidazolinium chloride or -methyl sulphate, or 3-ethyl-1-vinyl imidazolinium methyl sulphate. (D) is tert.-butyl acrylate. (I) is prepd. by copolymerisation of a mixt. comprising 10-30 wt.% 1-vinyl imidazole quaternised with di(m)ethyl sulphate as component (A), 40-60 wt.% (B), and 30-50 wt.% (C).
