    Abstract: A method of separation by fractional crystallization from a liquid mixture in which the liquid mixture is repeatedly passed in turbulent flow through an indirectly cooled crystallization zone, which must be kept full. The liquid remaining after deposition of a layer of crystals on the wall of the crystallization zone is removed, whereupon the surface of the layer of crystals is washed and the crystals are melted by passing a melt of similar compositions to that of the layer of crystals through the crystallization zone. During crystallization the melt is maintained at the temperature of crystallization and crystallization is stopped when the frozen fraction is from 70 to 98%.

    Abstract: Coercive finely-divided chromium dioxide contg. iron as a modifying agent is stabilised by tempering at 150-450 deg.C over a period of 10-360 mins. suspending in water and treating with an aq. soln. of a reductant at 20-95 deg.C. A gas stream moistened with water is passed over the chromium dioxide during the tempering stage. USE/ADVANTAGE - Acicular chromium dioxide is formed which is used for magnetic recording substrates. The material has a high coercive field strength. In an example, 973.6g Cr03 was stirred into 380g water. After 10 mins. 5.56g K-antimonyltartrate (Ksbo(C4H406)0.5H20) was added and also 48.56g acicular gamma-Fe203. After gas evolution had ceased 480g Cr203 was added and the mixt. stirred for a further 20 mins. The mixt. was then heated in an autoclave to 300-350 deg.C. producing chromium dioxide, which was then removed from the vessel, ground and tempered for 30 mins. at 380 deg.C. The tempered chromium dioxide was then suspended in an aq. soln. of Na-sulphite at 85 deg.C filtered, washed with water and dried in a vacuum at 50 deg.C. The chromium dioxide had a coercive field strength (Hc) of 53.5 kA/m.
