    Abstract: Cyclic caprolactam dimer (I) and epsilon-aminocaproic acid (II) can be prepd. at the same time from the aq. extracts, contg. oligomers, obtd. in prodn. of polycaprolactam, by treating the oligomers with H2SO4 at >50 degrees C, diluting with water, sepng. the pptd. I, treating the filtrate with a weakly basic ion-exchanger, concentrating and isolating the II which crystallises out. The process is simple and avoids the use of HCl. Aq. extracts contg. higher concns. of oligomers can be treated. The oligomers, at present a waste prod., can be utilised and the problem of disposing of waste water contg. these oligomers can be avoided. I is a heat stabiliser for polyoxymethylene. II can be used to produce synthetic fibres or caprolactam, and is an intermediate for pharmaceuticals and textile auxiliaries.
