    Abstract: A catalyst for gas-phase oxidations which comprises an inert support and a catalytically active composition comprising transition metal oxides applied thereto, or a precatalyst, is described.     Abstract: A description is given of a process for preparing aldehydes, carboxylic acids and/or carboxylic anhydrides, in particular phthalic anhydride, in which a gaseous stream comprising an aromatic hydrocarbon and molecular oxygen is passed at elevated temperature over a bed of a first catalyst and a bed which is made up of a second catalyst having a higher activity than the first catalyst and is located downstream of the first catalyst in the flow direction of the gaseous stream, wherein the catalytically active composition of the first catalyst comprises at least vanadium oxide, titanium dioxide and antimony oxide and the ratio of vanadium, calculated as V 2 O 5 , to antimony, calculated as Sb 2 O 3 , in the first catalyst is from 3.5:1 to 5:1. The source of antimony oxide used for the first catalyst is preferably particulate antimony trioxide having a mean particle size of from 0.5 to 5 mum. The process allows the desired oxidation products to be obtained in high yield over longer periods of time.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing a catalyst precursor containing vanadium, phosphorus and oxygen, for producing maleic acid anhydride by heterogeneously catalytic gas phase oxidation of a hydrocarbon with at least four carbon atoms, by reacting a pentavalent vanadium compound with a pentavalent phosphorus compound in the presence of an alcohol with a reducing action. According to the inventive method, (i) the alcohol with the reducing action is an alcohol of general formula (I), wherein the radicals R1 and R2, independently of each other, mean hydrogen, C1-to C9-alkyl or C1- to C9-hydroxyalkyl and the radical R3 means C1-to C9-alkyl or C1- to C9-hydroxyalkyl; (ii) the reaction is carried out without adding modifiers and co-reduction agents selected from the following series: hydrogen halide, sulphur dioxide, fuming sulphuric acid and tensides; and (iii) bringing together the pentavalent vanadium compound, the pentavalent phosphorus compound and the alcohol with the reducing action, forming the catalyst precursor by heating and isolating the same. The invention also relates to a catalyst precursor that can be obtained using this method, to a method for producing a catalyst from the catalyst precursor, to a catalyst that can be obtained using this method and to a method for producing maleic acid anhydride on this catalyst.
