Abstract: A process for the heterogeneous catalyzed gas phase partial oxidation of a precursor compound of (meth)acrylic acid to (meth)acrolein and/or meth(acrylic acid) using a mixed oxide catalyst formed into a geometrically shaped article of specific geometric characteristics. A process for the heterogeneous catalyzed gas phase partial oxidation of a precursor compound of (meth)acrylic acid to (meth)acrolein and/or meth(acrylic acid) in which a reaction mixture comprising the precursor compound, molecular oxygen and optionally an inert gas is fed at elevated temperature through a fixed catalyst bed containing a mixed oxide catalyst formed into a geometrically shaped article formed from a base shape that is processed to have at least one cavity such that the ratio of the volume of the geometric shape VK to the volume of the geometric base shape VG is less than or equal to 0.63 and the ratio of the outer surface of the geometric shape (OK) to its volume is at least 22 cm .

Abstract: Acrolein and acrylic acid are produced from propane and propene by absorption/desorption of propane and propene from a gas mixture followed by oxidation, in which no heterogeneously catalyzed dehydrogenation of propane occurs between the desorption and oxidation stages without addition of oxygen. Acrolein and acrylic acid are produced from propane and propene by: (a) separation of propane and propene from a gas mixture (A) by absorption in an absorption medium; (b) separation of propane and propene from the absorbent to give a mixture (B) containing propane and propene; and (c) using mixture (B) for oxidation to the required product(s). In this process, no catalytic dehydrogenation of propane without the addition of oxygen is carried out between stages (b) and (c).

Production of a catalyst for gas phase oxidation of organic compounds to alpha ,beta -unsaturated aldehydes and/or carboxylic acids, comprises an active phase of multimetal oxide composition being produced from a particulate precursor containing oxides and/or precursors and activated by calcination. A stream of precursor is fed at constant rate through calcination zone(s), in which the maximum temperature varies with time and locally are at most 5[deg]C. Independent claims are also included for: (a) a catalyst charge containing a specified active phase; (b) the production of alpha ,beta - unsaturated aldehydes and/or carboxylic acids over this catalyst charge; and (c) a belt calciner with heatable chamber(s) and gas-permeable conveyor belt for particulate material, running through the chamber(s), in which the chamber is provided with means of gas circulation by forced convection.
