Abstract: A process for the manufacture of a resilient foam based on a melamine-formaldehyde condensate, wherein an aqueous or alcoholic solution or dispersion containing a melamine-formaldehyde precondensate, an emulsifier, a blowing agent and a hardener is foamed by ultra-high-frequency irradiation and the foam is hardened by crosslinking the precondensate. The foam may be employed for heat and sound insulation, and as a packaging material.

Abstract: A self-extinguishing composition consists of (a) a normally solid thermoplastic homopolymer or copolymer of styrene which may be substituted by alkyl groups in the nucleus or side chain and which contains more than 50% by wt. of styrene or the substituted styrene having intimately incorporated therewith (b) an organic bromide having a plurality of bromine atoms attached to the carbon atoms and the bromine atoms constituting more than 40% of the bromide, in such an amount that the composition has a bromine content of 0.1-5%, and (c) 0.01-5% of (a) of a compound of formula where RA and RB are a phenyl radical which may be substituted by at least one C1- 3 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, a C1- 4 alkoxy radical, Cl or Br; R1 and R2 are H, Cl, Br, a C1- 6 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical or cyclohexyl; R3 and R4 are Cl, Br, cyano, nitro, a C1- 6 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical or phenyl. The (a) polymer may be polystyrene and/or a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile. Compound (c) may be 2,3-diethyl - 2,3 - diphenylbutane; 2,2,3,3 - tetraphenylbutane or 2,3 - dimethyl - 2,3 - di - p - tolylbutane. The bromide (b) may be hexabromododecane, tris - (2,3 - dibromopropyl)-phosphate or tetrabromoethane. The composition may be made by dissolving the three components in methylene chloride. The composition may also contain a foaming agent, e.g. pentane, and may be formed into a foamed sheet.

Abstract: Propylene polymers are produced by homopolymerization or copolymerization of propylene using a catalyst composed of an organometallic compound or metal hydride and a compound of a transition metal of Groups IV to VI of the Mendeleef Periodic System at a temperature of from - 20 DEG to + 160 DEG C. and a pressure of from atmospheric pressure to 25 atmospheres wherein the polymerization is carried out in the presence of an ethylenically unsaturated halogen compound which is a substituted alkene containing three or four carbon atoms and at least two chlorine and/or bromine atoms and having a terminal double bond, one of the halogen atoms being bound in the 1- or 2-position and another halogen atom being bound in the 3 position of the substituted alkene. Polymers produced are polypropylene, copolymers of ethylene/propylene, propylene/butene-1, and a terpolymer of ethylene / propylene / dicyclopentadiene. Unsaturated halogen compounds exemplified are 2,3 - dichloropropene - 1, 1,2 - dibromo - 3 - chlorobutene - 1 and 1,2,3 - trichloropropene-1. Also specified are 2-chloro-3,4-dibromobutene-1 and 1,2,3 - trichlorobutene - 1. Catalysts exemplified are 3TiCl3.AlCl3 with diethyl aluminium chloride, triisobutyl aluminium, butyl lithium or lithium aluminium hydride, and VOCl3 with diethyl aluminium chloride or methyl aluminium sesquichloride. Polymerization is effected in organic solvents such as petroleum ether alone or mixed with trichloroethylene, and cyclohexane. In one example, propylene is polymerized first with lithium aluminium hydride and then 3TiCl3.AlCl3 is added and the polymerization is completed. The unsaturated halogen compound acts as a molecular weight regulator. Conventional co-catalysts for increasing the stereospecificity of the catalyst may be co-employed. In a comparative example, 2-methyl-4-chlorobutene-2 is used as a regulator.

Abstract: Linear polyolefines which have been prepared by the polymerization of olefines containing two to four carbon atoms using as catalysts heavy metals of Group IV(a), V(a), or VI(a) of the Mendelleeff Periodic System are simultaneously purified and thermally degraded by dissolving or swelling the polyolefine in an inert organic solvent and heating the solution in the presence of oxygen or oxygen-supplying compounds for 15 to 200 minutes at a temperature between 70 DEG and 240 DEG C. Optionally the heat-treatment may be effected in the presence of 2 to 20% of water and in the presence of such an amount of an alkaline compound that the pH in the aqueous solution after the heat-treatment step is 6 to 7. Substances which have a large internal surface on to which impurities are absorbed may be added to the polymers before, during, or after the heat-treatment. Suitable substances are carbon, aluminium oxide, bleaching earths, and kieselguhr. The linear polymers may be polyethylene, polypropylene, or copolymers of ethylene and/or propylene and/or butene-1. Specified solvents are tetra- or decahydro-naphthalene, cyclohexane, benzene, toluene, xylene, and ethylbenzene. The oxygen-supplying compounds may be peroxides. Alkaline compounds which may be included in the heat-treatment step are ammonia, sodium, potassium, or calcium hydroxide, hydroxylamine or aniline.
