Abstract: Particulate expandable styrene polymers which contain from 0.0001 to 0.2% by weight, based on the styrene polymer, of an inhomogeneously distributed nucleating agent for expandable polystyrene, the nucleating agent being present only in a peripheral zone of the particles whilst the interior of the particles is free from nucleating agent. Nucleating agents which may be used are organic compounds having at least three bromine atoms, bonded to aliphatic or cycloaliphatic structures, in the molecule, or bromine compounds which are polymerizable, or are copolymerizable with styrene.

Abstract: Foams of high compressive strength are obtained by extruding a mixture of a styrene polymer and from 3 to 9 % by weight of a blowing agent comprising from 80 to 100 % by weight of CO2 and from 0 to 20 % by weight of at least one hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon which is gaseous at room temperature, the mixture being extruded in a zone at an excess pressure of from 0.1 to 2 bar, and the foam being allowed to solidify under this pressure.

Abstract: Foams with high compressive strength (I) are mfd. by extruding a mixt. of a styrene polymer (II), 3-9 wt.% blowing agent (III) comprising 80-100 wt.% CO2 and 0-20 wt.% hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon which is a gas at room temp. (IV), and the usual additives if required; the mixt. is extruded in a zone with an overpressure of 0.1-2 bar and allowed to set at this pressure. Pref. component (IV) has b.pt. -50 to +15 deg.C. (IV) is, e.g. propane, butane, isobutane, MeCl, EtCl, CCl2F2, etc.; pref., overpressure in the extrusion chamber is 0.4-1.6 bar.

Abstract: Molding materials containing high molecular weight polyphenylene ethers are produced by a process in which a solution of a polyphenylene ether in an organic solvent, together with another polymer, is freed of solvent by multi-stage evaporation. The solvent is preferably an aromatic compound from the class comprising the hydrocarbons, halohydrocarbons, ethers or esters, the ratio of the other polymer to the polyphenylene ether is advantageously from 99:1 to 20:80 parts by weight, the other polymer is, in particular, a homopolymer or copolymer of styrene or of a homolog thereof, which may be modified with rubber, and the multi-stage evaporation process preferably comprises not less than two and not more than four working up stages. The evaporation is carried out in general at from 120 DEG to 280 DEG C. and under a pressure of from 1 to 3,000 mbar, advantageously in the presence of assistants which reduce the partial pressure, eg. water and/or methanol.
