Abstract: 1396755 Purifying waste water BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 6 Oct 1972 [7 Oct 1971] 46193/72 Heading C1C In a process for purifying waste water, containing suspended matter and resulting from the manufacture of a styrene bead polymer in the presence of a vinyl pyrrolidone polymer or vinyl alcohol polymer used as suspension stabilizers, the suspended matter is flocculated by heating the waste water in the presence of from 0À02 to 5% by weight of sodium, potassium or ammonium persulphate. The waste water may be heated to 110-180‹ C. in the presence of the persulphate. Activated charcoal, silica or bentonite may be added to the waste water before, during or after heating. The flocculate may be removed by a suction belt strainer or by means of a decanter.

Abstract: 1,163,730. Moulding compositions. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 13 Jan., 1967 [15 Jan., 1966], No. 1928/67. Headings C3C and C3P. Particulate moulding compositions consisting of a mixture of a styrene polymer and an expanding agent, wherein the particles contain 0.001-0.6% by weight of the styrene polymer, in homogeneous distribution, of a brominated polymer of a 1,3-diene may be made by polymerizing monomeric styrene in a heating process, with or without other monomers, in the presence of an expanding agent and the brominated polymers and then cooling, or polymerizing styrene in aqueous suspension and adding the bromine compounds, with or without the expanding agent during polymerization at a point when the particles no longer divide. Exemplified styrene polymers are polystyrene and styrene copolymers which contain at least 50% by weight of styrene units. The copolymerization units include 2, methylstyrene, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, esters of acrylic or methacrylic acids and alcohols having 1-8 C, esters of fumaric acid and alcohols having 1-8 C, vinyl pyridine, N-vinyl compounds such as N-vinyl carbazole, butadiene or small amounts of divinylbenzene. Examples of suitable brominated polymers of 1,3-dienes are the bromination products of butadiene polymers, isoprene polymers and chloroprene polymers. Specific examples of suitable brominated polymers are 1,2,5,6 - tetrabromocyclododecane, brominated cyclo-octadiene - (1,5), 1,2,5,6,9,10- hexabromocyclododecane, brominated 1-vinylcyclohexene-(3) or brominated polybutadiene which has a linear structure. Bromination is carried out using elemental bromine, the reaction being carried out in solution or dispersion. Suitable solvents are n-butanol, CS 2 , glacial acetic acid or CCl 4 .

Abstract: Finely particled expandable styrene polymers may be manufactured by polymerizing styrene or mixtures of styrene with other a -ethylenically unsaturated monomeric polymerizable compounds containing preponderant amounts of styrene, in aqueous suspension in the presence of suspension stabilizers and blowng agents using polymerization catalysts at temperatures between 50 DEG and 120 DEG C. wherein the styrene or mixture of styrene with other a -ethylenically unsaturated monomeric polymerizable compounds contain dissolved therein at least one polymer of an a -ethylenically unsaturated monomeric polymerizable compound and the solution has a viscosity between 15 and 60,000 cp. at 25 DEG C. The preferred suspension stabilizers are sodium pyrophosphate, carboxymethylcellulose, polyvinylpyrollidone and a copolymer of vinylpyrollidone with methyl acrylate. In the examples the preferred blowing agents are pentane, a propane /tetrachloroethylene mixture and hexane, and the preferred catalysts are benzoyl peroxide, dibenzoyl peroxide, lauryl peroxide and azoisobutyronitrile. In Example (1) polystyrene is dissolved in styrene, (2) a styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer is dissoved in styrene, (3) a styreneacrylonitrile copolymer is dissolved in a mixture of styrene and acrylonitrile, (4) polystyrene is dissolved in styrene, (5) poly-a -methylstyrene is dissolved in a mixture of styrene, methyl methacrylate and N-vinylpyrollidone, (6) a styrene-2,5-dichlorostyrene copolymer is dissolved in a mixture of styrene and 2,5-dichlorostyrene and (7) polystyrene is dissolved in styrene.

Abstract: A finely-divided expandable thermoplastic is produced by polymerization of monomers in fine dispersion in an aqueous medium, a liquid or liquefiable gas expanding agent being added when the final spectrum of polymer particles sizes has been established the addition being completed at the latest when polymerization is 95% complete. Specified monomers are: styrene, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl ethyl ether, vinyl acetate, N-vinyl carbazole, ethyl acrylate, acrylonitrile and methacrylamide. Specified expanding agents which are non-solvents for the polymer are: propane, butane, pentane, hexane, cyclopentane, cyclohexane, dichlorodifluoromethane and 1 : 2 : 2-trifluoro-1 : 1 : 2-trichloro-ethane. The process may be carried out at 50-100 DEG C. in the presence of 0.2-0.5% of a catalyst, e.g. benzoyl peroxide or azoisobutyronitrile. Pressure due to the vapour pressure of the reactants may be applied. Additives may be dyes, plasticizers, flame retardants, e.g. chloroparaffins or brominated oligomers of butadiene, and/or protective colloids. The expanding may be added to the extent of 3-15% of the monomer and may contain a solvent, e.g. methanol or ethanol but one component should have a b.p. below the softening point of the mixture. In Example 1, sodium pyrophosphate, styrene acrylonitrile, n-butyl stearate, benzoyl peroxide and a copolymer of N-vinylpyrrolidone and methyl acrylate are mixed in water and heated. Pentane is added as expanding agent. In the other examples, (2) the acrylonitrile and n-butyl stearate are omitted, (3) hexabromocyclododecane is added in place of acrylonitrile and n-butyl-stearate and the expanding agent is a pentane/1 : 1 : 2 - trifluoro - 1 : 2 : 2 - trichloroethane mixture, (4) methyl methacrylate is added in place of acrylonitrile and n-butyl stearate and the expanding agent is a pentane/methanol mixture.
