The invention pertains to novel herbicidally effective saccharin carboxylic acids or carboxylic acid esters of formula (Ia), in which the substituents are as follows: L, M are hydrogen, C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 alkoxy C1-C4 alkylthio, chlorine, cyano, methyl sulfonyl, nitro or trifluoromethyl; Z is hydrogen, C1-C4 alkyl, C3-C8 cycloalkyl, benzyl or phenyl, where the penyl rings can in each case be substituted by C1-C4 alkyl, and R is H, C1-C6 alkyl, with the proviso that if L and M are hydrogen, Z is not methyl, phenyl hydrogen or an alkali metal cation or silver cation, and also excepting 5-carboxy-7-methyl saccharin and 5-carboxy-4-chlorosaccharin.
