Abstract: Blood processing systems and methods employ two sensors (334, 336), one (334) to detect a condition of plasma exiting a separation device (18) and another sensor (336) to detect a condition of a cellular component exiting the separation device (18). The first sensor (334) detects, e.g., contamination of the plasma due to the presence of unwanted cellular components. The second sensor (336) detects, e.g., dilution of the cellular component due to presence of plasma. Blood processing parameters are carried out based, at least in part, by conditions detected by one or both of the sensors (334, 336).

A first sensing assembly (334) including a first sensor in the plasma collection line is provided which in use operates to detect a characteristic of plasma in the flow of plasma and to generate a first output. A second sensing assembly (336) including a second sensor in the red blood cell collection line is provided which in use operates to detect a characteristic of red blood cells in the flow of red blood cells and to generate a second output. A controller (16) operates to control flows in the plasma collection line and the red blood cell collection line based upon the first and second outputs.

Abstract: A blood separation chamber (18) is provided for rotation about an axis. In one implementation, the blood separation chamber (18) comprises a base (388) that includes formed walls that define a hub (120). A separation channel (126) extends about the hub (120). Flow passages (142, 144, 146) extend between the hub (120) and the separation channel (126). The hub (120) enables attachment of external tubing to convey blood to and from the separation channel (126) through the hub (120). In another implementation, the chamber (18) includes an interior channel, which includes a recess (386) that extends outside the bounds of the walls establishing separation zone. The recessed interior channel (386) permits the yields of individual blood components separated in the chamber to be maximized without cross-contamination or contamination by other components present in the chamber (18).

Abstract: A portable pump apparatus for use in CAPD is provided as well as a method for providing CAPD to a patient. The portable pump apparatus for CAPD has a housing containing a pump, and a power supply, preferably a rechargeable battery, connected to the housing and electrically connected to drive the pump. A control knob on the housing is constructed and arranged to adjust the speed of the pump. A cover is mounted to the housing to enclose the pump. The cover has an inlet port and an outlet port to securely hold a tube thereunder. The portable pump apparatus for CAPD further has a display for providing drainage information and a clip so that the apparatus can be worn by a patient.
