Abstract:
Systems and methods separate blood cells from whole blood and pump the separated blood cells through an in-line leukofilter to a blood cell storage container. The leukofilter comprises a filtration medium enclosed within a flexible housing. The systems and methods include a fixture to restrain expansion of the flexible filter housing during operation of the pump. The fixture includes a bracket to enable its releasable attachment to the blood processing device employed to carry out the separation process.
Abstract:
A blood separation apparatus comprises a blood separation chamber (18) having a base (388) including formed walls (122, 124) that define an annular separation channel (126), an interior wall (136) that extends across the separation channel (126) to define a terminus, an inlet passage (146) on one side of the terminus that conveys blood into the separation channel (126) in a flow path for separation into blood component, an outlet passage (142) on another side of the terminus that conveys the blood component from the flow path and a mechanism to rotate the blood separation chamber (18) about an axis in direction of blood flow in the flow path from the inlet passage (146) toward the outlet passage (142).
Abstract:
A blood separation system (10) is described. The system comprises a device (14, 18) which, in use, operates to separate whole blood into red blood cells and plasma, a whole blood inlet line (290) for conveying a flow of whole blood into the device, a plasma collection line (292) for conveying a flow of plasma from the device, and a red blood cell collection line (294) for conveying a flow of red blood cells from the device. A first sensing assembly (334) including a first sensor in the plasma collection line is provided which in use operates to detect a characteristic of plasma in the flow of plasma and to generate a first output. A second sensing assembly (336) including a second sensor in the red blood cell collection line is provided which in use operates to detect a characteristic of red blood cells in the flow of red blood cells and to generate a second output. A controller (16) operates to control flows in the plasma collection line and the red blood cell collection line based upon the first and second outputs.

Abstract:
Abstract:
Blood processing systems and methods (10) convey blood cells from a blood cell source into a blood component collection flow channel that includes a blood cell storage container and an in-line filter to remove leukocytes from blood cells before entering the blood cell storage container. The systems and methods also convey additive solution from an additive solution source into the blood component collection flow channel. The systems and methods alternate the conveyance of blood cells through the filter with the conveyance of additive solution through the filter.
