Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To uniformarize distribution of density of organic substance gas in a container in a short time to activate by providing with a means for introducing and exhausting gas containing organic substances in a container where a substrate is installed on the inside thereof, a heating means for the substrate, a means for heating before the gas containing organic substances is introduced in the container, and a means for applying voltage to a pair of electrodes. SOLUTION: A substrate provided with an electron emitting element is installed in a container 11. Organic system impurities and oxygen, etc., can be removed by the inside of the container 11 by using an exhauster, or substituting with nitrogen and inert gas, etc. The effect to remove unnecessary gas for activation and to promote an activated reaction is achieved by heating the substrate. The amount of gas containing organic substances and dilution gas such as He is controlled with a gas-introducing controller 15. This mixed gas is heated with a heater 17 to introduce in the container. When a heating temperature of the mixed gas is the same as a substrate temperature, the temperature distribution on the surface of the substrate becomes small to activate uniformly. It is desirable to remove moisture which obstructs activation.

The mask and the adherent layer are removed to form the nonevaporative getter 12 within an image display area.

The surface conduction type electron emitting element is covered with a metal layer 6 on at least a part of the conductive films 4 arranged across the electron emission section 5, and at least a part of the metal layer 6 is covered with an oxide layer 7. Since these layers are thus arranged, the asymmetric property of the operating characteristic is secured, and the half-selection current can be reduced when a matrix is driven.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a structure suitable for mounting a taking member in a container by comprising the wirings and the taking members mounted on the wirings for taking the substances in the atmosphere inside of the container, and providing the taking members with a nonuniform thickness on the wirings. SOLUTION: An electron source substrate 1 of an image forming device is manufactured by mounting a plurality of electron emissive elements on a base and applying prescribed wirings. A rear plate 2, a supporting frame 3 and a face plate 4 are adhered to one another by using the frit glass and the like at a bonding portion to form an envelope 5. The non-evaporation type getters(NEG) as the taking member are placed on the X-direction wiring or the upper portions of the parts exposed to the surface of the Y-direction wiring, with respect to the electron source base 1. It is preferable that the installation regions be discontinuously and equally dispersed/separated over the whole image display zone. The NEG are formed through the combination of various thin film accumulation method such as spattering method, vacuum evaporation method, plating method and the like and the photolithographic technology.
