SOLUTION: A display panel 112 has an electron source constituted by arranging in matrix cold cathode elements which emit electrodes as many as how long a voltage is applied. An S/P converting circuit 106, a latch circuit 107, and a pulse-width modulating circuit 108 generate modulation signals having time width corresponding to an image signal by the cold cathode elements for one line of cold cathode elements while synchronizing the trailing edges of the modulation signals. A modulation signal delay circuit 109 and a delay control circuit 111 disperses the rise timing of the modulation signals having the same time width among the generated modulation signals within specific time width. Then a modulation signal voltage driving circuit 110 and a scanning signal generating circuit 104 drives the display panel 112 by using the obtained modulation signals.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an element from generating ringing at the time of synchronizing with a rising edge of a pulse and being destroyed when a picture signal is pulse-width-modulated and is impressed on a cold cathode. SOLUTION: When a NTSC picture signal is inputted, the signal is digitized by an 8-bit A/D converter, and (m)×(n) picture elements for one line of the panel are stored in a line memory 107. Each picture element value is inputted to 8-bit counter in a modulation signal generator 108. The counter counts up to 255 with the value inputted from the line memory 107 defined as an initial value in synchronism with a signal s1 which divides the horizontal synchronizing signal to (m), and then starts up output signal pulse s7 and keeps it at a high- level until the following signal s1. The modulated signal thus obtained rises up at a timing according to the picture element value and falls is synchronization with each line. Consequently, the generation of ringing can be prevented at rising up and its harmful effect can be prevented.

An arithmetic part 12 corrects individual input picture data by interpolating the correction values ΔVkL, ΔVkR with linear approximation. A modulation means 8 applies a modulation signal which is obtained by superimposing the offset voltage supplied from an offset voltage generating means 15 on the potential of the modulation signal generated on the basis of the correction picture data to the individual column wiring.
