Abstract: Un sorbente para su uso en un método para tratar la contaminación por una o más toxinas en un sujeto, en donde el sorbente es capaz de absorber la toxina y comprende una pluralidad de poros que varían de 50Å a 40.000Å con un volumen de poros de 0,5 cc/g a 5,0 cc/g, dicho sorbente teniendo un tamaño de 0,05 mm a 2 cm; en donde el sorbente tiene una estructura de poro tal que el volumen de poros total del tamaño de poro en el intervalo de 50 Å a 40.000 Å es mayor de 0,5 cc/g a 5,0 cc/g de sorbente seco; en donde: (i) la proporción de volumen de poros total de diámetro de poro en el intervalo de 50Å a 40.000Å con el volumen de poros total del diámetro de poro en el intervalo de 100Å a 1.000Å del sorbente es más pequeño de 3:1; (ii) la proporción de volumen de poros total de diámetro de poro en el intervalo de 50Å a 40.000Å con el volumen de poros total del diámetro de poro en el intervalo de 1.000Å a 10.000Å del sorbente es más pequeño de 2:1; o (iii) la proporción de volumen de poros total de diámetro de poro en el intervalo de 50Å a 40.000Å con el volumen de poros total del diámetro de poro en el intervalo de 10.000Å a 40.000Å del sorbente es más pequeño de 3:1; en donde dicha toxina es una toxina producida por un microorganismo que puede comprender una o más bacterias, virus, hongos o parásitos; y en donde la toxina comprende proteínas, péptidos, carbohidratos, lípidos, ácidos nucleicos, o combinaciones de los mismos.
