Abstract: The invention concerns polystyrene binders modified by fats, in particular esters of fatty acids or fatty alcohols, in particular triglycerides of higher fatty acids, preferably natural fats and oils. The fats can be added to the binder in high concentrations without impairing the binding properties. The addition of these fats is advantageous as concerns the wetting properties, waterproofness and above all hardness. In particular, dispersion adhesives, hot-melt adhesives and sealing compounds can be improved on the basis of the binders according to the invention.

Abstract: Joint sealing cpds. (I) with early rain resistance are claimed, contg. aq. polymer dispersions (II) and non-ionic cellulose ethers (III) (hydroxyethyl-, hydoxyethyl-methyl-, hydroxypropylmethyl- or hydroxypropyl-cellulose), with fillers and conventional additives, such as pigments, plasticisers, extenders, thickeners, foam suppressants, dispersants, pH regulators, preservatives, and anti-ageing additives as required, including at least one conventional organic liq. additive (IV); (I) are produced by mixing (II) with the other components, the novelty being that (III), in retarded and/or non-retarded form, is incorporated in the form of a premixed slurry with (IV). Process comprises mixing the usual additives (except the pH regulator) with (II), adding the slurry of (III) in (IV) (e.g. the liq. plsaticiser), then incorporating the filler and the pH regulator. (II) contain film-forming polyacrylates and/or acrylate copolymers, EVA, butadiene-styrene, vinyl acetate/maleic ester, silicone, urethane, vinyl acetate/methacrylic acid/chloro-prene or -isoprene polymers or copolymers, or polysulphides. (I) contain 25-90 wt.% (pref. 25-40 wt.% in highly-filled prods.), 0-60 (pref. 2-60) wt.% filler, 0-1 (pref. 0.3-0.5) wt.% wetting agent, 0-20 (pref. 5-15) wt.% plasticiser, and upto 1 wt.% (III)..
