    Abstract: A polyoxymethylene of high molecular weight is prepared by polymerizing trioxane by bulk polymerization in the absence of an inert solvent and in the presence of a cationic catalyst. Specified catalysts are borontrifluoride, stannic chloride, antimony pentachloride, methyl aluminium dichloride, methyl tin trichloride, an organo-aluminium or organo-tin compound in combination with an alpha-halogenated ether, saline compounds of halides of boron, iron, tin and antimony (but not antimony fluoride) where an aryldiazonium-fluoroborate is the preferred saline compound, an aryldiazonium salts. The catalyst may be diluted with an inert medium.

Suitable catalysts are inorganic and organic acids, acid halides, and Lewis Acids e.g. BF3 etherates, and diazonium fluoroborates. The polymerization may be in bulk, in solution, or in suspension. The catalysts may be inactivated after polymerisation using e.g. ammonia or a methanolic solution of an aromatic amine. The copolymers may be stabilized against heat by using e.g. polyamides, amides of polybasic carboxylic acids, amidines, and ureas, against oxidation by using e.g. phenols and aromatic amines, and against light by using e.g. a -hydroxybenzophenone derivatives. The copolymers may be formed into foils, films, or fibres, and may also be ground and comminuted.

In this way an early agglomerization of the atactic and/or low-molecular weight polymer dissolved in the mother liquor and fouling of the heat exchanger tubes and/or of the column trays is avoided.
