Abstract: The leading (47) and trailing (48) edges are relative to the motion of the medium. The longitudinal axis is disposed along the length of the support structure and is at a skew angle ranging from zero to positive and negative valves, wrt the direction of motion. A pair of side rails is disposed along the side edges facing the recording medium. The side rails are non-identical and non-symmetrical about the axis for providing air pressurisation about the axis for providing air pressurisation when the skew angle varies over its range. The slider thus flies at a close, uniform spacing from the moving recording medium.

Abstract: A magnetic recording apparatus and method for the constant frequency recording of concentric data tracks on a magnetic recording disk in a manner to provide continuously reducing track width and continuously reducing track-to-track spacing from the disk's inner track to the disk's outer track. A magnetic recording head moves on a path from the disk's inner track to the disk's outer track. The head's gap-to-radius skew increases as the head moves from the inner track to the outer track. Thus, the gap's width-projection onto a disk radius at the location of each track continuously decreases in length, from the inner track to the outer track. As the track width progressively decreases, the track-to-track spacing also decreases, to thereby provide higher track density at the disk's outer tracks. A flying head having a parallelogram shaped slider is described, allowing use of the invention in non-contact recording.

Abstract: In a ultra high density, multiple-disk drive, track switches within a cylinder of tracks as well as track switches to tracks on other cylinders both require a movement of the head stack actuator. Track switching latency in such a disk drive is reduced by overlapping pre-movement portions of the track switching process with the data transfer operation of the currently active recording head. In addition, post-movement portions of the track switching process are overlapped with the movement of the heads so that the next selected read/write head may begin a data transfer operation immediately upon arrival at the next track. Further, the pre-movement and post-movement portions of the track-switch process may be overlapped with low displacement movement of the read/write heads relative to the currently active track or the next track.

Abstract: A disk drive (102) stores multimedia data in long spiral data tracks. The tracks on opposite surfaces of the disk (201) spiral in opposite directions, so that a track on one surface can be read as the actuator (205) sweeps in, and a track on the opposite surface can be read as the actuator sweeps out. Because the actuator only follows spiral tracks without performing long seek operations, the actuator motor (207) can be reduced in size and stresses on actuator bearings and other parts are reduced. Additionally, due to reduced disturbances associated with seeks, it is possible to follow tracks more closely and therefore reduce the width of individual tracks. Further cost reductions are accomplished by spinning the disks at a slower speed and reducing the size of the spin motor (203) accordingly. Finally, data density can be increased simply because multimedia data does not require the same low error rate as conventional data. Preferably, a group of disk drives optimized for multimedia data is used to form a video-on-demand system. Compressed, interleaved portions of a video presentation, such as a motion picture, are stored in blocks on the spiral tracks. The drives read the blocks on one spiral track at a time from beginning to end, placing the data from these blocks in a set of buffers corresponding to different short time intervals. Video signals are output from the buffers. Any short time interval of the presentation can be accessed on demand by switching to the appropriate buffer.

Abstract: Clocking of Class IV partial response coded binary data is provided by way of circuit means that includes two analog threshold detectors. One detector is responsive to the analog read signal's positive-going amplitude crossing a a preset positive threshold value. The other detector is responsive to the read signal's negative-going amplitude crossing a preset negative value. The time of occurrence of both detector crossing transitions is phase-compared to a clock signal, and a phase error signal is generated for each detector, if a phase error exists. The two phase error signals are integrated by the use of a loop filter. The integrated phase error signal is then used to adjust the phase of a clock signal generator. The output of the clock signal generator is used to accurately clock, and to enable accurate recover of, the binary data that was originally encoded and written in accordance with the Class IV partial responsive coding convention.

Abstract: A magnetic disk drive channel circuitry is shown and described that generates eight incremental values of write current and eight incremental values of delta-V (the minimum voltage change per unit time which tests signals to discriminate between data and noise). Each of these variable parameter values may be program selected by a three bit bus signal. This variability testing of and adaptation to the optimum parameter value for each head media combination and by grouping tracks in contiguous data bands, the parameters may be optimized for tracks near the inner diameter, the outer diameter and in the middle band. The variable delta-V can also be used as an additional data recovery tool wherein re-reading with a lower value enhances recovery of missing bit errors and re-reading with an increased value can assist recovery from an extra bit error.
