    Abstract: An outbound frame state machine (OFSM) which generates data frames for transmission over a data link. The outbound frame state machine (OFSM) is microcode controlled and includes an outbound frame header buffer (60) for containing information to be included in the header of the frame, a data buffer (26) for storing data characters to be included in the data frame, a data generator register (98) for providing special sequences of data characters, if required, and an outbound frame trace buffer for storing a trace log of all frames transmitted in the normal mode and to be used if the outbound frame state machine (OFSM) is operating in the simulated I/O mode or the diagnostic mode. In the normal mode of operation, the outbound frame state machine (OFSM) builds a data frame using header information from the frame header buffer, and may include data from the data buffer, all as specified by control bits stored in a control register. The control register may also include a bit for causing special sequences to be transmitted. In the simulation mode, frames are built by the outbound frame state machine (OFSM) and then wrapped back to the channel to be processed like frames from a control unit. In the diagnostic mode, the outbound frame state machine (OFSM) inserts various characters into the outbound data bit stream to create possible error situations on the data link.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for transmitting signals from a plurality of input channels over a TDM optical network, where each of the input channels contains an optical data signal and an electrical control signal containing control information relating to the optical data signal. In accordance with the invention, respective optical receivers convert the optical data signals to respective electrical data signals, which a TDM data multiplexer time-multiplexes to generate a multiplexed data signal. A TDM control signal multiplexer time-multiplexes the electrical control signals to generate a multiplexed control signal that is combined with said multiplexed data signal to generate a composite electrical signal. An optical transmitter generates a composite optical signal from the composite electrical signal that is transmitted over the network, optionally after WDM multiplexing it with other composite optical signals. The corresponding reverse operations are performed at the receiving end to regenerate the original data and control signals.

    Abstract: A method, system, and product in a data processing system are disclosed for managing data transmitted from a first end node to a second end node included in the data processing system. A logical connection is established between the first end node and the second end node prior to transmitting data between the end nodes. An instance number is associated with this particular logical connection. The instance number is included in each packet transmitted between the end nodes while this logical connection remains established. The instance number remains constant during this logical connection.     Abstract: An apparatus and method for transmitting commands over a serial link having a switch (10) intermediate a channel and a control unit wherein continuous sequences of idle characters (K.28.5) are sent over the link for maintaining character synchronization. Commands and response information is sent between ports (P) of the switch and the channel (22, 24) and/or the control unit (26, 29) by modifying every other idle character to a modified idle character to which a command or response function has been assigned. In the modification, a selected number of the bits of the idle character are held invariant, and only those bits are varied which form data characters according to the rules of the 8B/10B encoding method. Code points for a total of 124 modified idle characters are disclosed to which a separate command or response may be assigned.

    Abstract: A system for the transmission of information between elements of a data processing complex and a method for establishing such a system. Two elements of a data processing system are connected by a physical link comprising multiple conductors attached to transceivers at channels in each data processing element. Once the transceivers have been synchronized, commands and responses are exchanged which ensure that all of the transceivers in a channel are connected to the same channel on the other end of the conductor. If the transceivers are considered configured and an entry is made in a Configured-Transceiver table. A search is made of an Allowed-Operational-Link table which contains sets of transceivers which are allowed to become operational links. The set of transceivers thus found, is compared against the Configured-Transceiver-Table to verify that all of the members of the set have been configured. If a match is found, this set of transceivers becomes an Intended-Operational-Link. The Intended-Operational-Link is verified to ensure that both channels agree on the set of conductors will form the operational link. If the Intended-Operational-Link verifies, the operational link is established therefrom.
