Abstract: PURPOSE: To improve the saturation coercive force and durability of a cobalt alloy magnetic recording disk. CONSTITUTION: A cobalt alloy magnetic recording disk has a lower layer, made of ruthenium(Ru) between a base and a cobalt alloy magnetic layer. The cobalt alloy magnetic layer, that is formed to be a laminated magnetic layer fabricated by laminating a cobalt alloy magnetic film and a nonmagnetic spacer film alternately and employs Ru for the nonmagnetic spacer film allows the saturation coercive force to be increased and provides the expitaxial growth, where growing continues from one particulate of all the films to others in the laminated structure.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To make it possible to making the resistance rate of a non-magnetic spacer layer have a specified value selected from wide range values by selecting the thickness of the non-magnetic spacer layer, Ti content or nitrogen content, or their several items. CONSTITUTION: The MR read converter provided with a thin film magnetoresistive(MR) layer 11 of ferromagnetic material and a non-magnetic spacer layer 14 in contact with the MR layer is provided. This thin film spacer layer is formed by an alloy of titanium(Ti) with a high resistance rate and tungsten (W). A thin film 12 of soft magnetic material is in contact with and stuck to the non-magnetic spacer layer so that the soft magnetic material is in parallel to the MR layer, and is parted from it.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To make it possible for a slider to come into contact with a disk at the time of CSS action without damaging the any parts in a disk device by adding specific additives to a carbon film thereby improving the end wear property of the disk. CONSTITUTION: The film of the magnetic recording disk consisting of a thin-film metal alloy has amorphous carbon or carbon contg. hydrogen and a protective film contg. iron Fe, tungsten W or tungsten carbide WC has the relatively smooth and flat surface of the carbon. The smooth carbon surface has the many lumps of the additives slightly projecting above the surface. These lumps conceivably provide low static wear as the nature of the protective film. Such disk is applicable even to the hard disk device of a contact-start-stop CSS type using the disk of the thin-film metal alloy having the protective film. As a result, the effects of improving the protective film of the thin-film disk, solving the problem of sticking of the head and improving the durability are obtd.

Abstract: A magnetic recording medium is formed by depositing a layer of a cobalt-platinum magnetic alloy (which may also contain chromium) on a non-magnetic underlayer consisting of tungsten, molybdenum, niobium or vanadium. The magnetic alloy has a higher coercivity than when deposited on a chromium underlayer. The coercivity of the magnetic alloy becomes even higher when the substrate is maintained within such a temperature range during deposition of the magnetic alloy that an intermetallic compound of cobalt and the metal of the underlayer is formed at the interface between the magnetic alloy layer and the underlayer.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce intrinsic noise of a recording medium. SOLUTION: In the case of an improved CoPt alloy magnetic recording disk for horizontal recording, the magnetic recording layer in the disk contains oxygen more than 5 atomic percent but less than 30 atomic percent. The disk is formed by taking oxygen in argon when sputtering for CoPt alloy magnetic layer. The disk construction obtained has considerably less noise of intrinsic medium even though the recording line density is high under the same conditions compared to that of a disk construction formed without taking in oxygen during sputtering for CoPt alloy magnetic layer. S/N ratio can be further improved by giving a head treatment to the disk after the sputtering process.
