Abstract: A flexibly interfaceable portable computing device includes a display coupled to a processor, which is coupled or selectively coupled to either or both of a keyboard and a recording unit. The display and the keyboard provide a first user interface to the processor. The recording unit is superimposable with a removable markable surface. A stylus allows user marking on the markable surface. The stylus provides a stroke signal and a stroke mark. The recording unit, the markable surface, and the stylus provide a second user interface to the processor. Optionally, the display also contributes to providing the second user interface to the processor. Switching among viewing modes for the display, and synchronization of information between the processor and a processor of the recording unit are also provided. A casing can enfold the display, the keyboard, and the recording unit to form a relatively slim profile. A portable computer system can have a display, a keyboard, and thick components enfolded and/or located within an overall thickness substantially equal to a sum of a first thickness for the display plus a second thickness for the keyboard, to present a slim profile.

Abstract: An apparatus used to assist a surgeon in surgery is divided into two parts, proximal and distal. The apparatus has a number of rigid links (1 - 4) which rotate about pivots (A - L) to position and re-position an instrument (11), like a surgical instrument, at a work point (Cmot) proximal to a patient but remote from the apparatus. The links cooperate in a way to move the manipulator about a center-of-motion (Cmot) with orthogonally decoupled degrees of freedom resolved at the work point. The proximal part (26) of the apparatus is adjustably fixed to a stationary object, like an operating table (22), while the distal part (25) of the apparatus holds the instrument (11). Certain links which can be adjusted in length, move the distal part with respect to the proximal part of the apparatus. In this manner, the work point of the manipulator and the working radius of the apparatus are changed without moving the proximal part. Actuators, manual or remotely (computer) controlled, both rotate the links about their pivots and adjust the length of the adjustable links. All the actuators can be mounted on the proximal part of the apparatus and electrically isolated from the manipulator in order to reduce the shock hazard to the patient.

Abstract: Using a smooth laminated armature assembly (3), with a ferromagnetic double-helix stator shaft (1), provides an economical radial pole linear reluctance motor requiring no external armature bearings. The stator shaft has a double-helical screw tooth pattern (2,2′) cut into its surface. Spaces between screw threads are preferably filled with low permeability material (6). The armature assembly has radial pole laminar plates (4), separated by identically configured laminar spacers (7), separated by an insulating layer (8), which provides eddy current isolation, physical stability and original adjustment of laminations for overall accuracy to linear positioning, despite tolerances in the individual laminar plates. Each laminar plate has a number of inwardly projecting teeth centered about the internal channel. These internal teeth and the double helix screw teeth on the stator shaft provide flux paths through the stator. The armature assembly and the stator are complementary, and smoothed for sliding contact within the electromagnetically active envelope, without other bearings. Linear placement of radial pole laminar plates is achieved by dimensioning the radial pole laminar plates and/or the laminar spacers slightly less in thickness than nominal spacing requires, filling the space with epoxy, and pressing the end laminations together to nominal total length. Excess epoxy is squeezed out, leaving the laminations evenly spaced. Stator and armature may be assembled, or may be prepared with virtual teeth in homogeneous smooth surfaces. The virtual teeth are prepared by ferromagnetic modification of selected patterns through laser hardening or through chemical doping.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an electromagnetic print element actuator which comprises a stator member (10) formed with two spaced apart pole pieces defining a gap and a coil (12) surrounding the stator member between the pole pieces, an elongated armature member (16) fixed at one end (18) and extending adjacent to the gap, and a print element (22) attached to the other end of the armature member. Energisation of the coil (12) causes attraction of the armature member (16) towards the gap and actuation of the print element (22). The print element actuator of the invention is characterised in that the armature member (16) extends substantially perpendicular to the flux path across the gap so that the flux path extends transversely through the width of the armature member (16). The invention also relates to a bank of electromagnetic print element actuators comprising a plurality of print element actuators of the above type in which the stator members of the actuators are formed into an integral stator unit (30) with the armature members extending parallel to each other.
