    Abstract: A programmable external storage control apparatus is provided which requires minimum intervention of a microprocessor and has more extendibility and flexibility. It includes a buffer (16) which stores a data transfer control program in addition to data to be transferred between a host (10) and an external storage (14), a controller (18) which reads from the buffer (16) and executes the data transfer control programs, and a microprocessor (20) which starts reading of the program from the buffer (16) to the controller (18) in response to a command from the host (10). The controller (18) controls data transfer between the host and the external storage independently of the microprocessor (20) while the microprocessor (20) may execute other jobs.

    Abstract: The object is to improve the read error rate for identification (ID) information In a sector servo type magnetic disk drive with a head comprising separate read and write elements. A pair of ID fields 21a and 21b are set up in each sector In each track of a magnetic disk for recording ID Information. The pair of ID fields are separated from each other along the track and radially displaced with respect to each other by a distance equal to an offset between the read element 24 and the write element 23 associated with the track. In a data write operation for a trace the magnetic head is positioned so as to read the ID information in the ID field 21b with the read element 23. In a read operation for the track, the head is positioned so as to read the ID information in the ID field 21a with the read element 23.

    Abstract: A disk drive having embedded servo information accesses data without using sector identifier recorded in each sector. When a signal sector pulse signal (SP) at the end of a servo area is detected in a dead state during start up, a first data state for the start of a sector transits to a second data state for the litter region of the sector being divided in accordance with the capacity stored in a current sector's pointer register. At the beginning of the sector, the contents of a next sector's pointer register is stored in current sector's pointer register and the contents of a next sector's operation register is stored in a current sector's operation register. Upon completion of sector processing, the first data state is maintained when the next sector is contiguous. When a terminate instruction is stored in current sector's operation register, the process moves to dead state. When the servo area arrives, the process moves to idle state. Responsive to this state, the magnetic head is activated to enable read and write operation for sectors having no sector identifier on the disk.
