Abstract: A virtual remote cathode has the position of a space charge cloud associated with it fixed by the geometry of a fixed insulating plate (902). The plate (902) can be made to accurate dimensions and hence the virtual remote cathode to control grid (502) distance can be accurately controlled and will not change as a result of any mechanical, electrical or physical changes in the construction. The fixed insulating plate (902) is located on a surface of the control grid (502) facing the cathode (510).

Abstract: A display device comprises a cathode and a permanent magnet. A two dimensional array of rows and columns of channels extends between opposite poles of the magnet for receiving electrons from the cathode. A screen has a plurality of phosphor pixels each corresponding to a different channel and each comprising a plurality of sub-pixels facing the side of the magnet remote from the cathode. Grid electrode means is disposed between the cathode means and the magnet. A plurality of pairs of anodes are disposed between the magnet and the screen and extending parallel to the columns of channels. Each pair corresponds to a different column of channels and each pair has first and second anodes extending along opposite sides of the corresponding column of channels. Address means supplies control signals to the grid electrode means to selectively control flow of electrons from the cathode through each channel to the corresponding pixel. An anode drive circuit supplies anode drive signals to the first and second anodes respectively. The anode drive circuit comprises bias means for generating an acceleration component of each anode drive signal for accelerating electrons through the channels, deflection means for generating a deflection component of each anode drive signal for deflecting electrons emerging from each channel towards different sub-pixels of the corresponding pixel, and correction means for varying the deflection component to align the deflected electron beams with the corresponding sub-pixels.

Abstract: An auto-stereoscopic display device comprises a plane viewing screen 90 a plane cathode 20, and a plane permanent magnet 60. A two dimensional array of rows and columns of channels 70 extends between opposite poles of the magnet for receiving electrons from the cathode. A phosphor layer 95 is disposed between the screen and the magnet and having a plurality of pixels each corresponding to a different channel. Grid electrode means 40 is disposed between the cathode and the magnet for selectively controlling flow of electrons from the cathode through each channel to the corresponding pixel in response to input video data. Deflection anode means 50 is disposed on the side of the magnet remote from the cathode for sequentially deflecting, orthogonally to the columns, each electron beam to different parts of the corresponding pixel in response to an input video clock signal. A lenticular lens array 260 is disposed between the phosphor layer and the screen and having a plurality of cylindrical lenses each corresponding to a different column of pixels. Such a display device may be used in a 16 view stereoscopic system, and may incorporate an interpolater if the device is supplied with fewer views from a video source.
