    Abstract: A conference server system, for internal use in the public switched telephone network (PSTN), links to public data communication networks (e.g. the Internet) for distributing computer displayable data between participants in voice telephone conferences. The server system includes a computer sub-system for storing data generated by the participants and distributing the data in coordination with voice presentations of respective participants. Data so stored and distributed includes computer-displayable data. Other data handled by the computer subsystem represents commands and functional requests issued by participants which pertain to the handling of computer-displayable data and voice parameters of the conference. conference participants, having separate and concurrent access to both the PSTN and the data network, receive and view computer-displayable data prepared by one of the participants in coordination with the respective voice conference. The conference server system connects to voice conference management resources of the PSTN in a manner enabling the server system to control voice parameters of a voice conference in response to data requests received from participants (e.g. requests from hearing-impaired participants for enhanced audio service), as well as enabling the conference management resources to control functions performed in respect to distribution of displayable data in response to spoken requests uttered by the participants, when the telephone system contains appropriate speech recognition equipment.

    Abstract: A system arrangement and method are disclosed for determining location of a wireless mobile unit involved in a call for public emergency assistance (e.g. a "911" call). The system is cost-effective in that it makes extensive use of existing telecommunication infrastructures, and does not require either special hardware or software at either the mobile unit site or the emergency assistance center handling a call. The system features shared use of a computer and specially defined database among a plurality of mobile switching offices serving a larger plurality of mobile base stations, the latter serving an even larger plurality of antenna and transceiving sites within predefined cellular regions. Signal strength measurements at the base stations are passed through the switching offices to a shared computer, and the latter uses the measurements to calculate a small area for which it would be practical to conduct a search if the mobile unit user requiring assistance is unable to help in determining his/her location. The calculated area and database are used to furnish the emergency assistance center handling the call with a detailed mapping of the calculated area, highlighting specific features (terrain, buildings, signs, etc.) that could be used to question the caller in a manner likely to produce responses from which the caller's location could be either precisely fixed or at least narrowed to a small part of the mapped area.

    Abstract: A user through a personal computer, in real time, controls the activation and selection of voice and data transmission paths in a communication network independent of network profiles. The network includes a public switched telephone network and a data network, e.g. the Internet for voice and/or data transmissions over either the voice or data networks. In the network, a voice terminal and a computer terminal are coupled to a shared voice and data terminal. A digital subscriber line access multiplexer is coupled to the shared voice and data terminal; the data network through a client server interface, and a voice network through an intelligent switch. The client server interface includes programmable stored data descriptive of network-authorized data and voice functions and transmission paths in the voice and data networks. The interface is linked to the multiplexer and switch for transmitting signaling messages directing traffic to the voice and data networks in accordance with the stored data. The computer terminal displays menus obtained from the client server which enable the user, in real time, to activate and select voice and/or data transmission paths through either the voice and/or data networks independent of pre-defined network profiles and/or traditional traffic assumptions.

Telephone system conferences utilizing the present conference ser ver system have the advantage of being usable to support voice-only and/or data-only pa rticipants (participants respectively linked to only the voice or data distribution par ts of a conference session), as well as to provide conference service between exactly two parti cipants which may be more effective than comparable services that the same two participant s would obtain using a direct dial-up telephone connection for voice and a public da ta network connection completely isolated from the voice conference management resource s of the PSTN to exchange data.
