    Abstract: A circuit (12) for recovering a current sense signal which is offset by a common mode displacement, such is the case when the signal is the voltage across a current sense resistor located on the high side bus or between the switches of a motor controller circuit. The circuit of the present invention converts the voltage across the resistor into a pulse code modulated (PWM) (OUTPUT) data, then downshifts the voltage, such that the signal of interest may be processed and recovered at the lower voltage for current feedback control purposes. The conversion of the measured current into a PWM signal is performed such that the PWM signal is synchronous with the motor PWM frequency. Although the output (MOTOR PHASE) of the IC is synchronous with the motor PWM frequency, the output duty cycle is completely independent of the motor PWM duty cycle. In this way, the reconstructed sampled output of the IC is exactly equal to the fundamental motor current, without the effect of ripple current.

    Abstract: A technique for reconstructing phase currents based on measurements of a DC bus current. Non-observable regions of DC bus current samples to reconstruct phase currents are reduced in size by using two phase space vector modulation. The non-observable regions can be further reduced by omitting deadtime insertions for switch actuations when output current is higher than a given threshold. Voltage command vectors in non-observable areas can be constructed by two time averaged vectors one of which is constructed to obtain an observable DC bus current reflecting motor phase current. The additive vectors have the same combined time average value as that of the voltage command vector in order to preserve volt-seconds. Current samples may also be averaged to provide a more accurate reconstruction of phase current. Current samples are time delayed to avoid transients for more accurate readings. When three phase PWM inverter modulation results in inability to determine the motor phase current from the DC bus measurement, the technique includes dynamically switching to two phase PWM modulation to reduce the time interval when the motor phase current is not determinable through the DC bus current measurement.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a fault of insulation of a conductor of a motor. SOLUTION: A current is detected by a current transformer having a small common-mode leakage current flowing in a ground wire cable of a motor controller circuit, and an average leakage current is generated from the detected current by a single-pole low-pass filter and converted into a PWM signal. A pulse generator generates pulse signals at a leading and trailing edges of the PWM signal. The pair of level shifters shift the leading-edge and trailing-edge pulse signals from a floating high-tension side voltage to a voltage based on the ground. The PWM signal having a duty cycle changing relative to the common-mode leakage current is generated from the level-shifted pulse signal by a pulse regeneration circuit, and the degree of motor insulation deterioration is calculated and determined by a digital signal processor.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent troubles (turn-on due to malfunction or the like) attributed to an additional switching operation or the Miller effect by conducting soft shutdown of a switching device in a motor control circuit when it failes. SOLUTION: A failure protecting circuit for a motor controller is provided with a soft shutdown circuit and a short-circuit protection circuit. Soft shutdown of all six switching devices in the motor controller occurs if failure occurs. Therefore, no further switching operation is conducted, thereby preventing generation of situations, such a turn-on operation due to a failure caused by further switching operation and the Miller effect related thereto. The short- circuit protection circuit detects the VCE of IGBT36, using a DESAT (desaturating) circuit of a gate driver IC. At the occurrence of a short circuit, IGBT a pulled up from a low on-state voltage, thereby improving the output characteristics.

    Abstract: Motor insulation degradation is determined using circuitry to sense the common mode leakage current from the ground wire cable. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, a small current transformer detects the common mode leakage current flowing in the ground wire cable of the motor controller circuit. A single pole low pass filter generates an average leakage current signal from the sensed current. The average leakage current signal is converted to a PWM signal. A pulse generator receives the PWM signal and generates pulse signals at the rising and falling edges of the PWM signal. A pair of level shifters receive the rising edge and falling edge pulse signals and transpose those signals from a floating high voltage to a voltage referenced to ground. A pulse reconstruction circuit receives the level shifted pulse signals and reconstructs a pulse width modulated signal having a duty cycle which varies with respect to the magnitude of the common mode leakage current. This output signal is input directly to a microcontroller or a digital signal processor to calculate and determine the amount of motor insulation degradation.
