Abstract: A grating collimator and backlight system provide collimated light to illuminate a backlight. The grating collimator includes a light guide configured to guide light as guided light and a light-recycling light source configured to provide light to the light guide and to recycle light received from the light guide. The grating collimator further includes a diffraction grating coupler configured to diffractively redirect the provided light into the light guide as the guided light. The backlight system includes the grating collimator configured to provide collimated output light and the backlight configured to receive the collimated output light. The backlight may be multiview backlight.

Abstract: A static multiview display and method employ an array of diffraction gratings to provide a multiview image having a direction that is a function of both color and a propagation angle of a collimated guided light beam. The static multiview display includes a light guide configured to guide light in a longitudinal direction and a light source configured to provide the collimated guided light beam, the propagation angle within the light guide being determined by a longitudinal offset of an optical emitter of the light source. The static multiview display further includes the array of diffraction gratings are configured to scatter out a portion of the collimated guided light beam as a plurality of directional light beams representing the multiview image.

Abstract: A bar collimator and backlight system provide collimated light to illuminate a backlight. The bar collimator includes a light guide configured to guide light as guided light and a light extraction feature on a side of the light guide configured to scatter a portion of the guided light out of the light guide as extracted light. The bar collimator further includes a collimation film between the light guide and the backlight, the collimation film being configured to collimate the extracted light. The collimated light has an extent corresponding to a length of an input of the backlight and is configured to serve as an illumination source of the backlight. The backlight system includes the bar collimator and the backlight. The backlight may be multiview backlight.

Abstract: A multiview backlight includes a first array active emitters configured to provide a first plurality of directional light beams and a second array of active emitters configured to provide a second plurality of directional light beams. The second array of active emitters is interleaved between active emitters of the first array of active emitters. Further, directional light beams of each of the first and second directional light beam pluralities have directions corresponding to view directions of a multiview display. A multiview display further includes an array of light valves configured to modulate the directional light beams to display a multiview image. An image resolution of the multiview image is configured to be dynamically selectable according to operational mode.

Abstract: A multiview backlight and a multiview display employ a microprism multibeam element to emit a plurality of directional light beams having principal angular directions corresponding to view directions of the multiview display. Abstract: A backlight and a multiview display employ a light guide having angle-preserving scattering feature and a tapered collimator. The angle-preserving scattering feature is configured to scatter a portion of guided light out of the light guide as emitted light. The tapered collimator is configured to collimate light provided by a light source as collimated light and to communicate the collimated light to the light guide to guided as the guided light. The collimated light has a collimation factor configured to provide a predetermined angular spread of the guided light, the collimation factor being a function of a taper of the tapered collimator. The multiview display includes multiview pixels that include view pixels as well as the angle-preserving scattering feature that includes a multibeam element having a size that is comparable to a size of a view pixel.

Abstract: A bar collimator and a backlight system employ diffractive coupling to provide a collimated source of illumination to a backlight. The bar collimator includes a light guide and a diffraction grating disposed on a side of the light guide. The light guide is configured to guide light received from a light source as guided light. The diffraction grating is configured to diffractively couple out a portion of the guided light and to direct the diffractively coupled-out portion toward an input of a backlight as a collimated light having an extent corresponding to a length of the backlight input. A backlight system includes the bar collimator and further includes a light source and a backlight adjacent to the light guide of the bar collimator, the backlight being configured to receive collimated light from a diffraction grating of the bar collimator.
