Abstract: In a third generation mobile telecommunications network, when a mobile is in a foreign network, packets are addressed to it by a home agent which changes t he header so that the source address is the home agent address and the destination address is the Care of Address of the mobile. Identifier codes for the mobile node and correspondent node are included in the packet header, and tables of identifier codes and t he correspondent nodes are retained by the home agent and sent to a foreign age nt (FA COA working) or mobile node (CO-COA working) which readdress each receiv ed packet, to a higher layer or to an application, as appropriate. In this non-encapsulated mode of working, packets are not rejected by a firewall or by egress filtering.

Abstract: In the UMTS, resource reservation is provided by translating Resource reservation Protocol context messages into and out of Packet Data Protocol messages, the processing being carried out by the translation interface (31) of a mobile terminal (30) which has associated terminal equipment (32); the terminal equipment can then be GPRS/UMTS unaware. The RSVP messages are mapped between the mobile terminal (30) and the Gateway support node (26) and regenerated as appropriate.

Abstract: Two-way resource reservation techniques for use in UMTS and other telecommunication systems. A determination is made as to whether a user requires resource reservations in both an uplink direction and a downlink direction within the system, and if the user requires such two-way resource reservations, a two-w ay protocol is implemented to establish the required resource reservations. The two-way protocol integrates resource negotiation procedures for both the uplink direction and the downlink direction so as to ensure that the required resource reservatio ns are provided for both directions. The two-way protocol may be a Packet Data Protocol (PDP) based on a Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) resource negotiation procedure. The determination may be based on one or more flag bits which identify whether the user requires resource reservations for both the uplink and downlink directions. The flag bits may be associated with a Quality of Service (QoS) Information Element (IE) of the system, and may be used to permit the user t o select between application of the two-way protocol and application of a one-way protocol.

Abstract: In a third generation communication system, packets from a correspondent node 24 are addressed to a mobile node 28 which is currently associated with a foreign network. A home agent 26 is set up in the home network and a care of address is allocated for the mobile node in the foreign network. The care of address may represent the current location of the mobile node or the address of a foreign agent 30 in the foreign network. The packet header is changed at the correspondent node so that the destination address is the care of address and a mobile node identifier 50 is provided for route optimization. The home agent maintains a mapping table of mobile nodes and mobile node identifiers so that route optimization may be provided.

Abstract: When a mobile node 28 is in a foreign network, packets from a correspondent node 24 are addressed to the mobile node by a home agent 26. The home agent changes the packet header so that the source address is the home agent address and the destination address is a care of address for the mobile node. The care of address may be the address of the mobile node, or the address of a foreign agent 30. Identifier codes for the mobile node and correspondent node are included in the packet header. Tables of identifier codes and correspondent nodes are retained by the home agent and sent to the foreign agent in a foreign agent care of address mode (FA-COA); or to the mobile node in a collocated care of address mode (CO-COA). In this method, the packets are not rejected by a firewall or by egress filtering because of the changed packet header addresses.
