Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, a radio communication system includes an Interrogator for generating and transmitting a radio signal. One or more Tags contained within the radio communication system receive the radio signa l. ABackscatter Modulator modulates reflection of the r adio signal using a subcarrier signal, thereby forming a reflected modulated signal. The Interrogator recei ves and demodulates the reflected modulated signal. Based upon the characteristics o f the demodulated signal the Interrogator can determine the identity of the Tag, a nd the relative velocity of the Tag with respect to the Interrogator. The Interrog ator can also determine if motion exists in the vicinity of the Interrogator, even no Tag is present, without the need for a separate motion detection system. The charac teristics of the demodulated signal, can also be used to determine the characteristics of motion of the Tag, such as the vibrational frequency. Alternate embodiments allow the Interrogator to transmit a first information signal to one or more tags, specifying which Tags should respond using Backscatter Modulator means, so that the characteristics of only particular Tags can be determined. Further alternat e embodiments allow the Tag to input analog data, and perform analog to digita l conversion of that data. This data may be then transmitted to the Interroga tor using Modulated Backscatter. Alternately, this data may be used as input to calcul ations performed in the Tag in order to analyze the frequency characteristics of th e analog input. The Tag can also, based. upon the results of these calculations, iden tify an abnormal condition and notify the Interrogator of the existence of such a co ndition.

Abstract: A modulated backscatter (MBS) system provides a processing gain over MBS background noise by using a wideband uplink signal and a narrowband downlink signal. The wideband uplink signal is generated by controlling the reflection of a narrowband downlink signal using a wideband data signal. The wideband data signal is generated by modulating a pseudo random signal with an information signal, where the chip rate of the pseudo random signal is higher th an the bit or symbol rate of the information signal.

Abstract: The present invention provides for an inexpensive RFID Tag design which uses an inexpensive Backscatter Modulator. The modulator is simply a CMOS gate driven by a shift register containing a modulating signal. The CMOS gate is connected to the antenna such that it modulates the reflectivity of the antenna in accordance with the modulating signal. In a second embodiment, the Tag is incorporated into a single CMOS integrated circuit which comprises all of the components, except for the antenna, necessary to implement an inexpensive read-o nly RFID Tag.

Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, an RFID system has a homodyne receiver having two outputs; the in-phase or I output and the quadratur e or Q output. The modulated baskscattered signal is composed of an information signa l, modulated onto a single frequency subcarrier signal, generating a modulated subcarrier signal; this modulated subcarrier signal is then backscatter modulate d onto the incoming RF signal. To demodulate this modulated backscattered signal, the I and Q outputs are combined using an IQ combiner. This IQ combiner introduces a 90.degree. phase shift, with respect to the frequency of the subcarrier signal, onto one of the demodulator outputs and then combines the outputs of the demodulator.

Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, a radio communications system is disclosed that can operate in one of several Modes which integrate in-building security, location determination, messaging, and data communications capabilities. The radio communication system includes at least one Interrogator for generating and transmitting a radio signal. One or more Tags of the system recei ve the radio signal. A Backscatter Modulator modulates the reflection of the radio signal using a subcarrier signal, thereby forming a reflected modulated signal. The Interrogator receives and demodulates the reflected modulated signal. The Interrogator can also transmit a first information signal to one or more tags, specifying which tags should respond using Backscatter Modulator means. In the Interrogation Mode, the Interrogator can determine the identity of the Tags in t he reading field, and can exchange data with those Tags that have been identified. In the Location Mode, the radio communications system can instruct some or all Interrogators to determine the location of a Tag or Tags within the building, regardless of whether the Tag or Tags are in radio range of the Interrogation Mo de. In the Messaging, or low speed data communications Mode, the radio . communications system can instruct some or all Interrogators to transmit a comma nd addressed to a particular Tag or Tags, regardless of whether the Tag or Tags are in the reading field of the Interrogation Mode, requesting that Tag or Tags perform some action. Other embodiments of the Messaging Mode allow the Interrogator to transmit data in addition to a command to the Tag or Tags, and also for the Tag or Tags to transmit a signal back to the Interrogator. This radio communications system can be interconnected with other communications capabilities such as electronic mail, voice mail, location, inventory management, and other systems.

Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, a radio frequency identification system, using modulated backscatter radio communications, is disclosed which supports the automated reconciliation of passengers, baggage, an d cargo on a transport. A baggage tag is attached to each piece of checked baggage , where the baggage tag is a read-only tag with modulated backscatter radio capabi lity. Thus, each piece of checked baggage can be identified for sortation, and also identified to ascertain if it has been loaded onto a particular aircraft. Pieces of baggage can be either loaded directly onto an aircraft, or loaded onto a cargo container; where a cargo tag is attached to the cargo container, the cargo tag i s a read-write tag with modulated backscatter radio capability. The aircraft itself may be equipped with aircraft tags, which could be read-only or read-write tags with modulated backscatter radio capability. Aircraft tags allow a positive associati on between the identity of the baggage or cargo container being loaded, the aircraf t on which it is being loaded, and the cargo bay doorway through which it is being loaded. To identify passengers, several alternatives are disclosed. In one embodiment, a magnetic boarding pass can be used with a magnetic stripe containi ng information about this passenger. In this embodiment, the passenger is responsib le for inserting the magnetic boarding pass into a magnetic card reader as the pass enger boards the flight. In another embodiment, a radio boarding pass could be used. T he radio boarding pass resembles a conventional boarding pass, however it has readonly modulated backscatter radio capability, perhaps identical with the technology used for the baggage tag. The radio boarding pass can be read as the passenger boards the aircraft. In an alternate embodiment, the passenger can have a passen ger card, which is a read-write tag with modulated backscatter capability. The passe nger card can be read as the passenger boards the aircraft, to identify the passenger . Alternately, the passenger card can be used for a number of enhanced passenger service applications in a generalized transportation environment.

Abstract: A communication system (i) selects an operating mode for communication with a tag (105); (ii) generates a first information signal (200a) based on the selected operating mode; (iii) modulates (202) a first radio signal (201) with the first information signal to generate a modulated radio signal; (iv) transmits (203) the modulated radio signal for reception by the tag, which generates therefrom a backscatter modulated reflected radio signal; and (v) receives (206) and processes (200, 101) the reflected radio signal based on the selected operating mode, wherein the first information signal and the processing applied by the communication system to the received reflected radio signal are different for different selected operating modes. Possible operating modes include (1) an interrogation mode that enables the communication system to identify the tag and (2) a location mode that enables the communication system to locate the tag, where the modes can have different ranges of operation and/or different data rates.

Abstract: A system provides short range wireless data communication from a central control point (e.g., interrogator) to inexpensive endpoints (e.g., tags). The endpoints utilize the technology of modulated backscatter for transmission from the tags to the interrogator. The system uses a new downlink protocol for data transmission from the interrogator to the tags and a new uplink protocol for data transmission from the tags to the interrogator. Both protocols use a backoff/retry algorithm to randomly retransmit any non-acknowledged messages. System capacity from the tags to the interrogator is further enhanced by the use of uplink subcarrier frequency division multiplexing.

Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, the communication system comprises an Interrogator and one or more Tags. The Interrogator generates a modulated carrier signal by modulated a first information signal onto a radio si gnal. The Interrogator transmits a downlink signal which comprises the modulated carri er signal and the radio signal. A Tag receives and processes the downlink signal. Specifically, the Tag demodulates the first information signal from the modulate d carrier signal and generates a second information signal typically based on the contents of the first information signal. The second information signal is used to modulate a subcarrier signal, thereby generating a modulated subcarrier signal. A Backscatter Modulator using this modulated subcarrier signal modulates the reflection of the radio signal, wherein the reflected signal is an uplink signal . The Interrogator receives and demodulates the uplink signal using homodyne detection to obtain the modulated subcarrier signal, which is then demodulated using a subcar rier demodulator to obtain the second information signal. In one embodiment, frequenc y of the subcarrier signal is an integer multiple of the second information signal symbol rate and is up to half the sampling rate of the subcarrier demodulator.
