    Abstract: A process for producing p,p'-biphenyl by the dealkylation reaction of 3,3',5,5'-tetra-t-butyl-4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl, said reaction being carried out in the presence of an acid catalyst using as solvent a saturated hydrocarbon having a boiling point of 190 DEG C or above, an alicyclic hydrocarbon having a boiling point of 190 DEG C or above, a hydrocarbon with an iodine value of no more than 1, sulfolane, or a mixture of these solvents.

    Abstract: A color-forming recording material containing: (a) an aromatic diamine, (b) an oxidizing agent such as a quinoid type electron-accepting compound, and (c) an acidic substance such as an aromatic carboxylic acid. The araomatic diamine (a) has preferably the formula (1), .........(1) wherein each o-f R1 and R4 Is, independently of the other, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group, each of R2 and R3 is, independently of the other, a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group or a substituted or unsubstituted aralkyl group, and X is a substituted or unsubstituted arylene group, or the formula (2), .............(2) wherein R1, R2, R3 and X are as defined in the -formula (1), and R is an alkyl group, an aryl group or an aralkyl group. The color-forming recording material is useful for use in a data reading apparatus using visible light and/or near infrared light.

    Abstract: There is disclosed an improvement in the production of an N-alkylaminophenol which comprises: the reaction of a divalent phenol with an alkylamine to provide a reaction mixture and recovering the N-alkylaminophenol from the reaction mixture, the improvement comprising; (a) adding an aqueous solution of an acid to the reaction mixture to provide a two-phase mixture composed of an aqueous phase which contains a water soluble acid salt of the resultant N-alkylaminophenol and an organic phase which contains an unreacted divalent phenol: (b) separating the unreacted divalent phenol as an organic solution by extraction of the two-phase mixture with an organic solvent, to leave an aqueous solution; (c) neutralizing the water soluble acid salt of N-alkylaminophenol in the aqueous solution with an aqueous solution of an alkali to provide an oily phase of Nalkylaminophenol; and (d) separating the oily phase and distilling it to recover the N-alkylaminophenol. A further improvement is disclosed which comprises: (a) adding an aqueous solution of an alkali to the reaction mixture after the reaction to provide a two-phase mixture composed of an aqueous phase which contains a water soluble alkali salt of the unreacted divalent phenol and an organic phase which contains the resultant N-alkylamino-phenol; (b) separating the N-alkylaminophenol from the twophase mixture by extraction with an organic solvent as an organic solution; and (c) distilling the organic solution to recover the N-alkylaminophenol.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To produce a ditetraalkylammonium carbonate at ordinary temperature and pressure by reacting a monotetraalkylammonium compound with a tetraalkylammonium hydroxide. CONSTITUTION:A monotetraalkylammonium compound (e.g. tetramethylammonium hydrogen carbonate) expressed by the formula (R is 1-22C alkyl; R is 1-4C alkyl; R is H, alkyl or aryl) is reacted with a tetraalkylammonium hydroxide compound (e.g. tetramethylammonium hydrogen carbonate) at ordinary temperature and pressure while stirring to provide the ditetraalkylammonium carbonate (e.g. ditetramethylammonium carbonate). Ditetraalkylammonium carbonate is useful as a raw material, etc., of electrolyte for electrolytic capacitor.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the above compound useful as a raw material for liquid crystal polymers in high purity and yield in a simple process, by acylating a crude product prepared by dealkylating 3,3',5'5'-tetra-tert-butyl-4,4'- dihydroxybiphenyl. CONSTITUTION:3,3',5,5'-Tetra-tert-butyl-4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl (especially preferably obtained by oxidative coupling reaction of 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol) is dealkylated to provide a reaction product containing dihydroxybiphenyl. The resultant reaction product is then reacted with an acylating agent (e.g., acetic anhydride) in the presence of preferably an acidic catalyst to afford a diacyloxybiphenyl, which is subsequently separated from the reaction mixture.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound of high purity in high yield, which is used as a starting substance for heat-resistant synthetic resins and synthetic fibers, by oxidizing 4,4'-diisopropylbiphenyl with molecular oxygen and subjecting the product, 4,4'-diisopropylbiphenylhydroperoxide, to acidolysis. CONSTITUTION:4,4'-Diisopropylbiphenyl is oxidized with molecular oxygen, preferably in the presence of a base, to form 4, 4'-diisopropylbiphenyldihy droperoxide and the product is subjected acidolysis, preferably in the presence of an acidic catalyst to give 4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl. On the acidolysis, hydrogen peroxide is allowed to coexist simultaneously to oxidize carbinols as by-products into dihydroperoxides, then these dihydroperoxides are acidolyzed simultaneously with the acidic catalyst to increase the yield of 4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:The isomerization of 4-alkoxy-2,6-dialkylphenol is effected only by bringing it into contact with a solid acid catalyst to permit high-yield production of the titled compound which is used as a synthetic intermediate of medicines such as vitamin E and additives for resins. CONSTITUTION:2-Alkoxy-2, 6-dialylphenol such as 4-methoxy-2, 6-dimethylphenol is brought into contact with a solid acid catalyst such as alumina, silica-alumina, or magnesia-titania under heating to give 2,3,6-trialkylhydroquinone. The above catalytic reaction is carried out in vapor phase, preferably in the temperature range from 300 to 400 deg.C at a space velocity of 0.01-5hr in an inert gas such as argon. The process can be effected in liquid phase as well.
