Abstract: This improved process for producing alkyl group-substd. aromatic hydrocarbons comprises reacting an aromatic hydrocarbon (1) with an alkylating agent (2) in the presence of a mordenite zeolite catalyst treated with a fluorine-contg. cpd. The alkylating agent (2) is selected from olefins, aliphatic lower alcohols, and alkyl halides (pref. propylene). The pref. aromatic hydrocarbon (1) is biphenyl, dibiphenyl or naphthalene. The typical product is p,p'-diisopropylbiphenyl. The fluorine-contg. cpds. can be hydrogen fluoride, ammonium fluoride, CF3Cl, SF6. As an example, 4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl is produced by the acid-decomposition of 4,4'-diisopropyl biphenyldihydroperoxide which is obtd. by oxidising 4,4'-diisopropylbiphenyl with oxygen molecules. The above 4,4'-diisopropylbiphenyl is reacted with acylising agent to obtain 4,4'-diacyloxybiphenyl.

Abstract: Biphenols are prepd. by oxidative coupling of the corresp. phenol in the presence of diphenoquinone produced as by-prod. in the same reaction, or of a mother liquor from the reaction which contains the diphenoquinone. Pref. the oxidative coupling is carried out using oxygen. Specifically claimed is the conversion of 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol to 3,3',5,5'-tetra-tert -butyl-1,1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diol.

Abstract: A color-forming recording material containing: (a) an aromatic diamine, (b) an oxidizing agent such as a quinoid type electron-accepting compound, and (c) an acidic substance such as an aromatic carboxylic acid. The araomatic diamine (a) has preferably the formula (1), .........(1) wherein each o-f R1 and R4 Is, independently of the other, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group, each of R2 and R3 is, independently of the other, a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group or a substituted or unsubstituted aralkyl group, and X is a substituted or unsubstituted arylene group, or the formula (2), .............(2) wherein R1, R2, R3 and X are as defined in the -formula (1), and R is an alkyl group, an aryl group or an aralkyl group. The color-forming recording material is useful for use in a data reading apparatus using visible light and/or near infrared light.

Abstract: There is disclosed an improvement in the production of an N-alkylaminophenol which comprises: the reaction of a divalent phenol with an alkylamine to provide a reaction mixture and recovering the N-alkylaminophenol from the reaction mixture, the improvement comprising; (a) adding an aqueous solution of an acid to the reaction mixture to provide a two-phase mixture composed of an aqueous phase which contains a water soluble acid salt of the resultant N-alkylaminophenol and an organic phase which contains an unreacted divalent phenol: (b) separating the unreacted divalent phenol as an organic solution by extraction of the two-phase mixture with an organic solvent, to leave an aqueous solution; (c) neutralizing the water soluble acid salt of N-alkylaminophenol in the aqueous solution with an aqueous solution of an alkali to provide an oily phase of Nalkylaminophenol; and (d) separating the oily phase and distilling it to recover the N-alkylaminophenol. A further improvement is disclosed which comprises: (a) adding an aqueous solution of an alkali to the reaction mixture after the reaction to provide a two-phase mixture composed of an aqueous phase which contains a water soluble alkali salt of the unreacted divalent phenol and an organic phase which contains the resultant N-alkylamino-phenol; (b) separating the N-alkylaminophenol from the twophase mixture by extraction with an organic solvent as an organic solution; and (c) distilling the organic solution to recover the N-alkylaminophenol.

CONSTITUTION:A monotetraalkylammonium compound (e.g. tetramethylammonium hydrogen carbonate) expressed by the formula (R is 1-22C alkyl; R is 1-4C alkyl; R is H, alkyl or aryl) is reacted with a tetraalkylammonium hydroxide compound (e.g. tetramethylammonium hydrogen carbonate) at ordinary temperature and pressure while stirring to provide the ditetraalkylammonium carbonate (e.g. ditetramethylammonium carbonate). Ditetraalkylammonium carbonate is useful as a raw material, etc., of electrolyte for electrolytic capacitor.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the above compound useful as a raw material for liquid crystal polymers in high purity and yield in a simple process, by acylating a crude product prepared by dealkylating 3,3',5'5'-tetra-tert-butyl-4,4'- dihydroxybiphenyl. CONSTITUTION:3,3',5,5'-Tetra-tert-butyl-4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl (especially preferably obtained by oxidative coupling reaction of 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol) is dealkylated to provide a reaction product containing dihydroxybiphenyl. The resultant reaction product is then reacted with an acylating agent (e.g., acetic anhydride) in the presence of preferably an acidic catalyst to afford a diacyloxybiphenyl, which is subsequently separated from the reaction mixture.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound of high purity in high yield, which is used as a starting substance for heat-resistant synthetic resins and synthetic fibers, by oxidizing 4,4'-diisopropylbiphenyl with molecular oxygen and subjecting the product, 4,4'-diisopropylbiphenylhydroperoxide, to acidolysis. CONSTITUTION:4,4'-Diisopropylbiphenyl is oxidized with molecular oxygen, preferably in the presence of a base, to form 4, 4'-diisopropylbiphenyldihy droperoxide and the product is subjected acidolysis, preferably in the presence of an acidic catalyst to give 4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl. On the acidolysis, hydrogen peroxide is allowed to coexist simultaneously to oxidize carbinols as by-products into dihydroperoxides, then these dihydroperoxides are acidolyzed simultaneously with the acidic catalyst to increase the yield of 4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl.

Abstract: PURPOSE:The isomerization of 4-alkoxy-2,6-dialkylphenol is effected only by bringing it into contact with a solid acid catalyst to permit high-yield production of the titled compound which is used as a synthetic intermediate of medicines such as vitamin E and additives for resins. CONSTITUTION:2-Alkoxy-2, 6-dialylphenol such as 4-methoxy-2, 6-dimethylphenol is brought into contact with a solid acid catalyst such as alumina, silica-alumina, or magnesia-titania under heating to give 2,3,6-trialkylhydroquinone. The above catalytic reaction is carried out in vapor phase, preferably in the temperature range from 300 to 400 deg.C at a space velocity of 0.01-5hr in an inert gas such as argon. The process can be effected in liquid phase as well.
