    Abstract: A DC to DC converter includes a power input for receiving power at a predetermined input voltage. The converter is current-controlled to provide output power at a predetermined output voltage and several output current levels. The converter is further selectively controlled for either continuous or intermittent mode of operation. The continuous mode provides the higher output current levels and the intermittent mode provides the lowest output current level.

    Abstract: A cooperative paging system (10) and radio telephone system (15) combine to provide conventional delivery of short paging messages to a combination pager/radio telephone (40) via a first communication path, while a radio telephone link operating at a higher data rate is used to deliver large data messages to the pager/radio telephone (40). The radio telephone link is formed by a transceiver section (205) of the pager/radio telephone (40) coupling to a radio telephone base station (50,52) and calling up a paging terminal (32) of the paging system (10). The paging terminal (32) retrieves the large data messages from a temporary message memory (42) to deliver to the pager/radio telephone (40).

    Abstract: A receiver receives a transmitted signal having a periodic predetermined signal, a method and apparatus detects a first predetermined signal. Power may be conserved during a portion of a subsequent predetermined signal. The subsequent predetermined signal is divided into at least a first and second portion. If the first portion is detected, the subsequent predetermined signal is considered detected and power is conserved for the second portion. If the first portion is not detected, the receiver remains active for the second portion in order to detect the subsequent predetermined signal.

    Abstract: A paging system with a remote pager which includes a transmitter with a plurality of individually selectable encoded acknowledge signals. The system includes apparatus at the paging terminal for composing messages with a primary message and a plurality of alternate responses, each response corresponding to one of the acknowledge signals. Upon reception of the page, the pager is operated by selecting the acknowledge signal corresponding with the desired response to the primary message. Transmission of the selected acknowledge signal acknowledges reception of the page and, simultaneously, answers the primary message.

    Abstract: A radio paging apparatus (100) with an LPC speech synthesizer (112) is described. The paging apparatus of the present invention includes a controller and decoder (106), and a microprocessor controlled speech synthesizer (112) both coupled to a dual port memory (110). Digitally encoded voice messages are stored in a dual port memory (110) which includes a scratch pad area for storing control words and address pointers which indicate the attributes and location of stored digitally encoded voice messages. Messages are reconstructed by reading the control words and address pointers and processing the information stored in memory (110) with a speech synthesizer (112). The structure is adapted to store and process LPC encoded signals and it permits a message to be stored while another is being reproduced. In addition, information contained in the control words permits old or read messages to be discarded if a new message must be stored.

    Abstract: of the Invention A radio communication receiver decodes digital signals transmitted over a radio link and is capable of altering the bit rate of the receiver to match the bit rate transmitted from a remote location. The receiver includes a receiver portion 21 receiving radio signals and producing a received signal. A microprocessor 26 is used for decoding the received signal. The microprocessor (26) is responsive to a bit rate signal that is generated by a programmable divider (33). The microprocessor (26) is adapted to detect a predetermined code signal to alter the timing characteristic of the bit rate signal for generating a bit rate signal at a second rate for decoding received signals at a second bit rate designated by the predetermined code signal.
