    Abstract: In a communications system having transmissions containing certain information-of-interest (147, 149) at predetermined intervals in the transmission, there is provided a method for isolating and processing that information-of-interest. The method is characterized by sensing the start of a transmission (141) and isolating for processing as the information-of-interest, the information received about instant(s) predeterminally removed in time (145) from the sensed start of transmission (141). Thus, the information-of-interest is isolated principally on the basis of elapsed time. The method for isolating and processing that information-of-interest is further characterized by sensing (249) the start of a transmission from the received signal power of the transmission exceeding a predetermined threshold (259); AGCing the transmission (233) and attenuating the AGC'd transmission from a maximum level to a desired level before the information-of-interest is expected to arrive; isolating for processing as the information-of-interest, the information received about instant(s) predeterminally removed in time from the sensed start of transmission, by timing (263) the expected interval between the instant that the start of the transmission is sensed and the predetermined instant that the information-in-interest should arrive (whereby the information-of-interest is isolated principally on the basis of elapsed time); tagging the information (247) isolated about that instant for processing; and beginning processing (275) with information just preceeding the isolated information (whereby the reliability of the information detection is enhanced by one-to-several bits).

    Abstract: There is provided a method of rapid Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) of a time-dispersed signal having echoes (D, Fig. 1C) (where the time dispersal represents a significant fraction or more of the transmitted symbol interval). It comprises a sliding correlation (304) of a received signal against a known sequence or via channel sounding to obtain the time-dispersal function of the communications channel upon which the signal is transmitted (306/307) and a summation of the squares of the quadrature components of the energies at relative maxima of the correlations (306/307) (correlation peaks determined with reference to a threshold level (305)) to integrate the energy defined by the correlation function to determine the energy present among the time-dispersed echoes utilizing the time-dispersal function. Thus, the energy present in the time-dispersed echoes is related to the received signal strength, the RSSI comprises a scalar of the energy present and the scalar comprises a function of the receiver's gain, RSSI determinations during any given interval are less dependent upon the ambulatory velocity of the receiver, and RSSI determinations of equivalent accuracy are obtained more rapidly or more accurate RSSI determinations are obtained per unit time.

    Abstract: In a communications network having time-dispersed signals, there is provided a mechanism for soft decision decoding. It comprises: radio reception of a time-dispersed signal, at least partly equalizing those time-dispersal effects, recovering information contained in the signal, multiplying with that recovered information the absolute value of that at-least-partly-equalized signal (scaled by a number derived from channel conditions over a time during which at least part of the information to be recovered is distributed), and error-correcting the multiplied information by a Viterbi algorithm channel decoding scheme of error correction. Accordingly, soft decision information is generated from within the equalization process itself.

Received quadrature signals having a known synchronizing sequence transmitted on one of the vectors is correlated to a local replica of the sequence.     Abstract: Tone selection of frequencies f1,f2) is effected by a keyboard (10) coupled to a phase increment latch (18) and a programmable divider (18). Together with a 16-bit accumulator (20) and a read only memory (22) they form the phase accumulator sine wave synthesizer. The input data programs the divider to output (26) a sample pulse train of frequency fs, where fs equals the sum of the selected frequencies f1, f2. The pulse train clocks the accumulator and is fed to enable a latch (30). For each pulse, the phase increment f2/fs stored in the latch (16), is added to the accumulator contents. The eight most significant bits from the accumulator address a Rom (22) storing a table of amplitude samples of a sinusoidal waveform. The addressed amplitude is stored in the latch (30). A digital-analog converter (34) provides a corresponding analog waveform, generated at the sample rate, fs, and containing the selected frequencies f1, f2. A filter (36) removes higher frequency components, and outputs a multitone signal of frequencies f1, f2.
