Abstract: An apparatus for controlling the illumination of a display used to prevent messages in a pager is described. A microcomputer is used for controlling the operation of the display in response to a read switch being actuated. A light switch, coupled to an illumination circuit provides display illumination upon the light switch being manually activated. The microcomputer also couples to the light switch to allow monitoring of the switch actuation. Upon actuation of the light switch, when a message is being displayed, the microcomputer will maintain the illumination of the display, even after the light switch has been released. Once the message has been read, the microcomputer resumes monitoring the light switch, and the illumination of the display is terminated.

Abstract: In a communications system wherein a transmitted message is preceeded only by an address, an asynchronous circuit detects the address and provides an initializing signal to a synchronous clock recovery circuit so that the first bit of the recovered clock signal is synchronized to the first bit of the message. During the transmission of the message the synchronous clock recovery circuit makes minor adjustments to the phase of the recovered clock to maintain synchronization between the recovered clock and the message. At the termination of the message, the synchronous clock recovery circuit is inhibited until the asynchronous circuit detects another address.

Abstract: A digital communications receiver is provided which is capable of receiving encoded signals transmitted over a radio link. The receiver is configurable such that it is capable of being commanded to receive signals exhibiting either a first ratio of information to parity or signals having a second ratio of information to parity. The receiver can also be commanded to receive signals having third or fourth ratios of information to parity. Thus the effective information throughput of the receiver can be increased upon command when desired.

Abstract: A signalling protocol (70) comprising a plurality of interleaved phases (90a, 90b, 90c and 90d) is transmitted at one of a plurality of baud rates, the plurality of baud rates being multiples of a base baud rate. The signalling protocol (70) allows a selective call receiver (FIG. 5) to decode at an operating baud rate equivalent to the base baud rate irrespective of the transmission baud rate by decoding only a portion (90a, 90b, 90c or 90d) of the transmitted signal, the portion decoded (90a, 90b, 90c or 90d) determined by the baud rate and the address of the selective call receiver.

Abstract: A paging receiver having acknowledge back capability is provided with the capability to request a received message to be forwarded to an alternate paging receiver in a paging system after having received its address and associated message. The paging receiver includes an entry device for selecting the alternate paging receiver to which the message is further to be sent, and after the selection is made, the paging receiver generates the acknowledge back response requesting the message be further sent to the selected alternate paging receiver.
