    Abstract: The system determines at least one property of a communication channel which connects a transmitter and a receiver. The system includes a device (134) for generating values of at least sampled sections of a received signal which is received by the receiver after transmission over the channel. The variance of the generated values is then determined (146). Another device (154) quantises the values of the received signal to provide a quantised value. An error signal is then provided (162) in response to the difference between the values of the sample, received signal and the quantised values. A device (170) calculates the variance of the error signal. The channel amplification property of the communication channel is then calculated (178) in response to the variance of the generated values and the error signal.

    Abstract: A dual mode radio communication unit for a digital communication system is provided having an error controller including an error detection encoder and a forward error correction encoder which encode an input information signal into an error protected data bit stream. In addition, the communication unit includes a mode selector which enables either the error detection encoder or the forward error correction encoder used with a particular mode of operation of the communication unit. Further, a corresponding dual mode radio communication unit is provided having an error controller for generating estimated information signal samples according to a group of algorithms consisting of either an error detection algorithm or an error correction algorithm. In addition, the corresponding communication unit includes a mode selector for receiving a signal according to a particular one of the group of algorithms which is associated with a particular mode of operation of the corresponding communication unit.

    Abstract: A receiver for decoding a differentially-encoded communication signal transmitted thereto over a communication channel comprises means 1390, 1420 for demodulating the differentially-encoded communication signal, sampling units 1398, 1428 for sampling at least portions of the demodulated received signal, and a decoding metric estimator 1450 coupled to receive the sampled signal. The decoding metric estimator includes a delay element 1266, a complex conjugate converter 1270 and a mixer 1274 operative to mix the sampled signal and the complex conjugate signal to form a metric estimation signal. A soft decision decoder 1470 receives and decodes the metric estimation signal. A symbol detector (1226, Fig. 9) may be connected between the delay element and the complex conjugate converter. The symbol detector may comprise a magnitude setter (1220) and a phase quantizer (1224).

    Abstract: An error detection system 200 for a discrete receiver indicates bad frames of binary information signals 206 which contain distorted bits in densities so great as to cause a decoder 212 to generate an incorrect, decoded signal. A soft decision signal decoded by a convolutional decoder 212 is re-encoded by an encoder 224, and the re-encoded signal 230 is compared 256 with the signal 206 - 248 received by the receiver. When portions of the re-encoded signal 230 differ too greatly from the actual, received signal 206 - 248, a bad frame indication 286 is generated.

    Abstract: A signal weighting system for associating a confidence level with portions of a communication signal transmitted upon a multipath channel and received by a receiver. A signal received by the receiver is equalized by an equalizer circuit, such as a maximum likelihood sequence estimator, and the equalized signal generated thereby is supplied to an adaptive filter which is synthesizes portions of the multipath channel. The signal received by the receiver is altered responsive to values of a filtered, equalized signal generated by the adaptive filter.
