Abstract: A method of estimating noise variance is disclosed. The method includes: receiving a signal including an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) symbol having in-band tones including in-band pilot tones, and band-edge tones including band-edge pilot tones and guard tones; estimating an effective noise variance for the in-band tones using the in-band pilot tones and channel estimates for the in-band pilot tones; and estimating an effective noise variance for the band-edge tones using the band-edge pilot tones, channel estimates for the band-edge pilot tones, and the guard tones.

Abstract: In a high data rate communication system, a method and apparatus for improved throughput while transmitting data packets within multiple time slots. In order to avoid unnecessary retransmissions of a packet, a subscriber station sends a Stop-Repeat signal to a base station, causing the base station to cease further transmissions of the packet. In order to enable successful decoding of a packet, a subscriber station sends a Continue-Repeat signal to a base station, causing the base station to send retransmissions of the packet during time slots beyond a predetermined default number of time slots.

Abstract: A communication system including a closed loop power control system. Prior to allowing a handoff to a new base station, the subscriber station verifies that its reverse link signal is being received by the destination base station with sufficient energy. The determination is made based on the received reverse link power control commands from the base station. Moreover, a handoff may be forced when the base station providing the best forward link signal is not receiving the reverse link signal from the subscriber station with sufficient energy.

Abstract: Synchronized broadcast transmits a same broadcast content using a same waveform from multiple transmitters. Transmitters each apply a same spreading code for broadcast transmissions. In a spread-spectrum communication system having a time division multiplexed forward link, a synchronized broadcast transmission is inserted into a broadcast slot. One embodiment employs an Orthogonal Frequency Divisional Multiplex (OFDM) waveform for the synchronized broadcast. An OFDM receiver is then used to process the received synchronized broadcast transmission. An alternate embodiment implements a broadcast Pseudo-random Noise (PN) code for use by multiple transmitters. An equalizer is then employed to estimate the synchronized broadcast transmission.

Abstract: A method and an apparatus for reducing power consumption of a decoder in a communication system are disclosed. In a communication system communicating a packet, the packet can be arranged among slots of a communication channel so that each slot following the first slot contains redundant bits of the packet with respect to the first slot. A receiving station estimates metric of a received slot, determines a quality metric threshold, and delimits an interval in accordance with the modified quality metric threshold. If the estimated quality metric is outside of the interval, the segment is decoded. The decoding process comprises delimiting a plurality of intervals in accordance with the quality metric threshold, associating each of the plurality of intervals with one of a plurality of parameters, determining an interval form the plurality of intervals into which the estimated quality metric belongs; and decoding the received signal for a number of iterations equal to the one of a plurality of parameters associated with the determined interval. In the course of the decoding process, a stopping criterion is evaluated, and the decoding process is terminated in accordance with the stopping criterion.

Abstract: An optimum combiner that reduces the amount of interference imposed upon a first base station (102) by transmissions of other base stations within the same communication system. Two antennas (112, 114) are used to receive transmissions within a receiving station (110). A rake receiver is coupled to each antenna (112, 114). By optimally combining the signals that are received by each independent finger of the rake receiver, interference that is correlated between a finger associated with the first antenna (112) and a finger associated with the second antenna (114) can be minimized with respect to the desired signal. Optimum combining requires determination of optimum combining coefficients. A max-ratio combining algorithm may be substituted for the optimal combining algorithm depending upon interference characteristics.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for tracking signals in a wireless communication system. In one embodiment, a base station includes a rake antenna having multiple fingers. When any of the fingers goes out of lock, the base station waits a predetermined time period and then adjusts the lock detect filter. The adjustment is based on comparison of received signal energy to an adjusted energy threshold. The comparison may result in an increased energy level of the filter. In one embodiment, if a mobile station is in soft hand-off, the base station ignores the lock state of the fingers and transmits power control information based on the received signal energy. If the mobile station is not in soft hand-off a predetermined power control pattern is applied for gradual power adjustment.
