Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an ion-exchange fiber having a large specific surface area and indicating an excellent ion-exchange capacity by treating the surface of the fiber with hydrogen peroxide. CONSTITUTION:After ion-exchange fiber is manufactured it is treated with hydrogen peroxide having a concn. of about 2-10% at room temp. for 0.5-500 hours. Since hydrogen peroxide is fairly highly reactive, it is sufficient to treat the fiber with such a solution as to permit its immersion. The ion-exchange fiber thus treated is entirely swollen due to a finely evolved gas in the solution and due to the oxidative reaction and the surface of the fiber is etched to cause subtle irregularities thereon and its specific surface area becomes very large. For this reason, the activating area contributing to the ion-exchange or adsorption becomes large and the water content is somewhat increased, leading to a more excellent ion-exchange capacity.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent the inclusion of calcium ion and magnesium iron, by incorporating ion exchange fibers in a humidifier. CONSTITUTION:Ion exchange fibers, whose base material is multi-core type mixed and composite fiber having the sheath constituent of insoluble synthetic organic ion exchange fiber, in which an ion exchange group is introudced into an ion exchange polymer such as polyustylene series or the like, and especially the same fiber having the sheath constituent of ion exchange polymer, as well as the core constituent of reinforcing polymer is incorporated in a humidifier. This ion exchange fiber is constituted of the short fiber of about 0.1-100mu and is employed in the form of filament series or felt series. A mixed body of a cation exchange group, such as sulfonic acid group or the like, and an anion exchange group, such as amino group or the like, is employed as the ion exchange group. In this case, the mixing ratio of cation to anion is about 1:9-10:0. According to this constitution, the inclusion of calcium ion and magnesium ion may be prevented.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the subject fiber having excellent ion-exchange capability by spinning a three-component sea-island conjugate fiber from 3 kinds of polymers, drawing the fiber, removing the sea component polymer to obtain an ultrafine conjugate fiber consisting of two kinds of polymers and introducing an ion-exchange group to one of the polymers. CONSTITUTION:A three-component sea-island conjugate fiber is spun by using an island component consisting of a conjugate material (preferably multi-core sea-island conjugate material, etc.) composed of a polymer for accepting ion exchange group (preferably crosslinked polystyrene) and a reinforcing polymer (preferably polypropylene. etc.) and a sea component consisting of a polymer (preferably water-soluble polyester, etc.). The conjugate fiber is drawn, the sea component polymer is removed to obtain ultrafine conjugate fiber having a diameter of

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the subject ion-exchange fiber having extremely high ion- exchange speed and exhibiting remarkable effect in the ion-exchange and adsorption separation in dilute state by graft-polymerizing ion-exchange group to ultrafine fibers. CONSTITUTION:An ultrafine fibrillated fibers having a fiber diameter of 0.00001-0.1mum are produced by spinning a multicore sea-island type composite fiber composed of polyester, polyamide, etc., drawing said composite fiber and removing the sea-component from the product. The fibrillated ultrafine fiber is immersed in an acidic vinyl monomer having carboxyl group, preferably a solution of a mixture of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid and the monomers are polymerized to obtain an ultrafine ion-exchange fiber containing cation- exchange group introduced into the fiber. Since the obtained fiber has large specific surface area and extremely high ion-exchange rate, it can be suitably applied in a wide application field such as the softening of water, desalination of sea water and removal of harmful metals.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To prolong the filtration life of a precoat and to improve the quality of treated water by using a powdery ion-exchange resin and an ion-exchange fiber as the precoat material and continuously or stepwise decreasing the ratio of both materials in the circulating direction of water to be treated in the precoat layer. CONSTITUTION:A powdery ion-exchange resin and an ion-exchange fiber are used as the precoat material, and the ratio of the fiber to resin is continuously or stepwise decreased in the circulating direction of water to be treated in the precoat layer. As a result, amorphous iron is adsorbed by the ion-exchange fiber-richer layer without causing significant contraction. A floc of the ion- exchange fiber is then formed in the ion-exchange resin-richer layer with the powdery ion-exchange resin as the nucleus to impart appropriate porosity and compressive strength. Consequently, the service life of the precoat material is drastically prolonged, and the quality of treated water is improved by the high ion exchangeability of the fiber having a large surface area.
