    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process in which the interval of reactor cleaning can be prolonged and by which a high-quality liquid-crystal polyester having excellent heat resistance is produced and improved productivity is attained. SOLUTION: The process comprises condensation-polymerizing the feedstock therefor under stirring at a given temp. using a polymerizer having feedstock inlets, a stirrer, and a temp. controller. During the reaction, the temps. of at least those parts of the wall of the polymerizer which are located on the surface of the liquid phase and located above and near the surface are regulated to 70-200 deg.C. Alternatively, a distillate resulting from the reaction is continuously sprayed over that part of the polymerizer wall which is in contact with the gas phase inside the polymerizer and over that part of the stirrer shaft which is in contact with the gas phase, whereby the polymerizer wall and the shaft are kept clean in conducting the polycondensation.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound in high purity and yield, by reacting an aniline having no phenolic hydroxyl group with a maleic anhydride in the presence of a phosphorus oxide in a specific solvent at a specific temperature, and distilling and recovering directly the solvent and then the product. CONSTITUTION:A compound of the formula (R1-R5 are H, halogen, 1-6C alkyl, phenyl, 1-6C alkyl ether, phenoxy, COOH or NO2) is reacted with a maleic anhydride or a derivative thereof in the presence of a phosphorus oxide, e.g. phosphorus pentoxide, (dehydration and imide ring closing agent) in a solvent, e.g. a nitrogen-containing aprotic polar solvent such as N,N-dimethylformamide. capable of dissolving the above-mentioned oxide and the aimed compound N-phenylmaleimide, at 80-200 deg.C temperature, and the solvent and then the aimed compound are recovered directly by distillation to give the aimed N- phenylmaleimide useful as a raw material for heat-resistant polymers, etc.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process whereby the cycle of washing the inside of a reactor for the production of a liquid crystal polyester can be prolonged, the productivity can be therefore improved, and a high-quality polyester having excellent heat resistance can be produced. SOLUTION: This process comprises reacting a liquid-crystal-polyester-forming material containing polyester polymer pellets prepared by condensing an aromatic dicarboxylic acid with an alkylene glycol and having a logarithmic viscosity of 0.8dl/g or below and a particle diameter of 2,000μm or below. In this process, the reaction mixture is agitated so that the shear rate may be 150-1,000 (1/sec).

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process whereby a liq.-crystalline polyester having high qualities, esp. an excellent heat resistance, can be produced at an improved productivity while reducing the amt. of a monomer or oligomer remaining in a polymerizer to prolong the cleaning cycle of the polymerizer by stirring under specified conditions. SOLUTION: In producing a liq.-crystalline polyester by polycondensation by acetic acid removal with a polymerizer having a material charge port, a stirring device, and a jacket, the polycondensation is conducted while the reactants are stirred under a shear rate of 150-1.000 (1/sec). Usually at least one material selected from among a hydroxycarboxylic acid, an acetoxycarboxylic acid, a dihydroxy compd., a diacetoxy compd., a dicarboxylic acid, and a polyester comprising dioxy units and dicarbonyl units is used. Pref. the reactants are stirred under a shear rate of 150-1,000 (1/sec) for at least 10% of the time from the beginning of stirring and temp. rise until the distillation ratio reaches 90%.
