    Abstract: 1,200,195. Suspension polymerization. TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc. 26 Sept., 1967 [26 Sept., 1966; 29 Sept., 1966], No. 43836/67. Headings C3G and C3P. Ethylenically unsaturated monomers are polymerized in suspension in an aqueous medium in the presence of a water-insoluble oil-soluble free radical-generating initiator and in the presence of, as suspending agent, at least one copolymer derived from at least 50% by weight of acrylamide and at least one C 1 -C 3 -alkyl ester of acrylic or methaorylic acid. The polymers obtained are in the form of pearly beads. Monomers specified are styrene, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, styrene-acrylonitrile mixture, styrene-methyl methacrylate mixture, methyl methacrylate - ethyl acrylate mixture, styrene-divinylbenzene mixture and styrenemethyl methacrylate - acrylonitrile mixture; also exemplified is the suspension polymerization of styrene-acrylonitrile prepolymer in the presence of polybutadiene. Suitable initiators include benzoyl peroxide, lauroyl peroxide, dit.-butyl peroxide and azobisisobutyronitrile. If desired, a nonionic surfactant, e.g. a polyoxyethylene derivative of a phenol, fatty acid ester or amide, may be used conjointly with the specified suspending agent. Polymerization is suitably effected in the presence of a mercaptan chain transfer agent and preferably at a pH of 4 to 9. The suspending agent can be prepared by polymerizing acrylamide and the alkyl (meth)- acrylate ester(s) in a solvent such as water, a mixture of water and an alcohol (e.g. isopropyl alcohol), a mixture of water, acetone and an alcohol, or benzene in the presence of an initiator such as a persulphate or azobisisobutyronitrile. Some intramolecular cyclization and crosslinking may occur during the polymerization.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To purify an aliphatic double bond-containing imide compound containing impurities, particularly an amic acid compound, by separating and removing the impurity from the imide compound with an organic solvent selected from halogenated hydrocarbons, aliphatic esters and aliphatic ketones. CONSTITUTION:A polyamine expressed by the formula R-(NH2)n (R is organic group containing at least 2 carbon atoms; n is an integer >=2), e.g. 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane, is reacted with an aliphatic double bond-containing carboxylic acid anhydride or a derivative thereof, e.g. maleic anhydride, in an amount of 0.95mol or more based on 1mol NH2 group in the above-mentioned polyamine to give a crude double bond-containing imide compound, which is then dissolved in a solvent selected from halogenated hydrocarbons, aliphatic esters and aliphatic ketones, preferably methylene chloride, methyl acetate or acetone, to separate and remove insoluble impurities and purify the imide compound.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled prepolymer curable rapidly without foaming, with a single-step reaction, by carrying out the dehydrative imidation of a polyamine with an aliphatic carboxylic acid anhydride having double bond, using a specific imide cyclization agent in the form of a solution in s polar organic solvent. CONSTITUTION:The objective prepolymer can be prepared by the dehydrative imidation of (A) a polyamine of formula R-(NH2)n (R is >=2C organic group; n>=2) (e.g. m-phenylenediamine, 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane, etc.) with (B) 0.52-0.95mol, based on 1mol of the NH2 group of said polyamine, of an aliphatic carboxylic acid anhydride containing double bond or its derivative (e.g. maleic anhydride, itaconic anhydride, its halogen-substituted compound, etc.) in a polar solvent in the presence of (C) an oxide of P or S (e.g. P2O5, metaphosphoric acid, etc.) as an imide cyclization agent. In the above process, the imide cyclization agent is used in the form of a 10-50% solution by dissolving in a polar organic solvent (e.g. DMF) prior to the reaction.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain liquid crystal resin pellets, which have such shape that improved feed performance and volumetric characteristics can be provided, at high yield. SOLUTION: In a manufacture of pellets, in which liquid crystal resin in a molten state is delivered, in the form of string, into a trough in which cooling water fed from a nozzle flows, cooled, solidified, and cut in the presence of cooling water, the trough is inclined with respect to the horizontal line at an angle larger than 0 degree and not exceeding 30 degrees and the trough is set so that the height of the trough near the delivery point of the resin is made larger than the height of the trough near a cutter.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To precipitate a nitrogen-containing heat-resistant polymer in particulate form from its solution in an organic solvent continuously at a low cost and low energy consumption, by feeding the solution together with a precipitant to a high-speed rotary impact mill. CONSTITUTION:While a precipitant which is miscible with the nitrogen- containing heat-resistant polymer solution to be fed and is a nonsolvent for said polymer is being fed continuously to a high-speed rotary impact mill of a speed of 1,000-50,000rpm, the nitrogen-containing heat-resistant polymer solution of a concentration of 5-50wt% is fed thereto in a flow rate 0.01-2 times higher than that of the precipitant. Examples of said nitrogen-containing heat resistant polymers include polyimide, polyamide-imides, polyester-imides and polyaramids. Examples of the solvents for said polymer solutions include N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and N,N-dimethylacetamide. Examples of said precipitants include water and aliphatic liquids (e.g., methanol and ethanol).
