Abstract: PURPOSE:To reduce the size and weight and stabilize the electric characteristic by coating the outer surface of a metal plate and the inside of through holes where electrode lead wires are to be passed with an electrically insulating film to form a substrate, and mounting a bulb and electrodes on the substrate. CONSTITUTION:Nearly all of the outer surface of a metal plate 21A and through holes made in the thickness direction of the metal plate 21A where electrode lead wires 26 are to be passed are coated with a thin glass film 21B to insulate electrically. A pair of electrodes 25a, 25b are mounted on the substrate 21 in both end sections of a glass bulb 20 via transparent stems 24 with convex surfaces facing upward. Electrode lead wires 26 connected to the electrodes 25a, 25b are passed through the through holes 23 to the outside. Because the outer surface of the substrate 21 and the inside of the through holes 23 are coated with a thin glass film 21B, the pair of electrodes 25a, 25b and the electrode lead wires 26 are electrically insulated from the substrate 21 and short- circuiting of these parts can be surely prevented.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To reduce the size and weight of a fluorescent lamp by forming its discharge control plate from a metal plate coated with a glass, ceramic or similar electrically insulating material. CONSTITUTION:A discharge control plate 13 is formed by coating its surface with a glass, ceramic or similar electrically insulating material. Discharge is started when a discharge starting voltage is applied across a pair of electrodes 12a, 12b, and makes a turn through a dome-shaped space at the top in a glass bulb 10 as a discharge path is bent in an inversed U shape by the regulation of a discharge control plate 13. Although an impurity is emitted from the discharge control plate 13 during the discharge between the electrodes 12a, 12b, its quantity is quite small because the outer surface of the metal plate 13A which stores the impurity gas is coated with a thin glass film 13B to prevent the impurity gas emission. Consequently, deterioration of the electric characteristic due to the emission of the impurity gas can be remarkably mitigated.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To make it possible to homogeneously heat the entire peripheries of fused areas so as to reduce the occurrence of cracks by forming opening in glass tubes and then fusing the openings to make the discharge paths of the glass tubes continuous with each other through the connection hole formed by fusion. CONSTITUTION:The sides walls of glass tubes 1 and 1 located near their closed ends are heated with a burner 5. After the side walls are softened, a gas preferably an inactive gas is blown into the tubes 1 through exhaust tubes 4 and 4. As the result, the internal pressure of the glass tubes 1 and 1 increases and the softened areas are broken by gas pressure to form outwardly protruding openings 6 and 6. Next, after the glass tubes 1 and 1 are located in such a manner that their openings 6 and 6 are in contact with each other, the openings are fused by heating with a burner 7. As the result, the glass tubes 1 and 1 having almost U-shaped discharge paths 2, are connected together at the ends and become continuous with each other through a connection hole 8 formed by fusion. Therefore, a light-emitting tube 9 having a long curved discharge path is formed.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To start a lamp stably and easily without sacrifice of a service life by burrying a proximity conductor as an auxiliary starting means especially in the U-shaped section of a light emission tube. CONSTITUTION:A fluorescent lamp 15 is provided with a U-shaped bulb 18 formed through metal molding. An U-shaped discharge path 19 is formed in the bulb 18 while fluorescent material is applied onto the inner face of bulb. Furthermore, a bridge section 20 is formed integrally in a gap between the walls of U-shaped tube and a thin conductor or a conductive wire 21is burried in the bridge section 20. Since the starting arc is guided by the conductive wire and develops smoothly, the starting performance of lamp can be improved.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To cause a positive column to extend between a pair of inner tubes, installed in an outer tube, along a direction perpendicular to a discharge path and display direction so as to realize a sufficient luminous surface area and a sufficient luminous intensity by restricting the maximum distance between the openings of the inner tubes and the inner surface of the outer tube. CONSTITUTION:After a hollow cylindrical outer tube 3 with large diameter is formed by the use of a light-transmitting material such as glass, one end of the outer tube 3 is closed and curved in spherical form to make a spherical section 4. Next the inner surface of the spherical section 4 is coated with a phosphor film 5 emitting red, green or blue monochromatic light. After that, electrode filaments 10 and 10 are fixed to two areas of an end glass plate 7, then ends of a pair of tubular inner glass tubes 11 and 11 are fused to the end plate 7 in such a manner that the filaments 10 and 10 are surrounded by the inner tubes 11 and 11. It is desirable that the diameter (L) of the outer tube 3 is not more than 50mm.. In addition, the maximum distance (l) between the outer open ends of the inner tubes 11 and 11 and the inner surface of the spherical area 4 is restricted to below 15mm., so that electric discharge with luminous intensity sufficient for display is carried out stably.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To realize secure coloring control by filling a thread-form electric insulating filler at the position avoiding the main discharge route of the main discharge carried out between a cathode and an anode. CONSTITUTION:In order to insulate in recesses 20a and 20b formed in a dischargeable space electrically, quartz glass woods 23 and 23 which are a thread- form electric insulating filler are compressed and filled in the recesses 20a and 20b of a discharge route regulator 15, and then, the discharge route regulator 15 is inserted to a bulb 11. As a result, the length of the discharge routes in the discharge spaces 20a and 20b is made longer and the conductance is reduced. Consequently, a short-circuited discharge in the discharge spaces is prevented, and only the plain discharge is carried out in the main discharge route between an anode and a cathode 12. Since the main discharge between the plural anodes and cathodes can be carried out at a time, plural colored lights can be radiated simultaneously thereby, and the coloring control can be made securely.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To suppress the diffusion of an electric discharge to discharge paths other than that being excited by providing a preventing body restricting the diffusion of the electric discharge around a cathode. CONSTITUTION:The radial diffusion of the electric discharge by an anode 51a and a cathode 41 is restricted by the inner periphery of a discharge diffusion preventing body 43. The electric discharge around the cathode 41 is squeezed by the center hole 44 of the preventing body 46 and flows only into the parallel discharge path 49a of a discharge path restricting body 46 with the anode 51a being excited, and the diffusion to other discharge paths 49b-d is suppressed. Therefore, only the phosphor film 50 on the discharge path 49a is excited to give an emission, and the stray light can be suppressed. The red light by the cathode 41 red-heated when observed from the above of a bulb 20 and the blue light by the electric discharge around the cathode 41 are shielded by the preventing body 43, thus the stray light can be suppressed. Accordingly, the diffusion is prevented and the stray light can be suppressed. No part of the bulb 40 is shielded, and the stray light can be suppressed with the good lamp efficiency.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent discharge itself or invasion of ultraviolet rays generated through discharge in a discharging space while a fluorescent lamp is turned off so as to obtain a desired luminous color by forming a discharging passage through the discharge- passing areas of a discharge-controlling member with each of said discharge-passing areas located at a certain mutual distance. CONSTITUTION:The enclosure 1 of a fluorescent lamp is formed by a cylindrical outer tube 1a having a curved surface-like window 2 and a sealing plate b formed in a plate shape, and its inside is charged with inert gas such as mercury and argon, etc. Partition walls 4 are formed by combining glass plates in a cross-shape, one end of each of the walls is shaped so as to tightly touch the outer tube 1a of the enclosure 1, and the other end is shaped in a straight line with the size of the wall whose straight line end does not reach the opening of the outer tube 1a. The inside of the outer tube 1a is divided into four regions by these partition plates 4, each of color filters 6a-6c of red, green, blue and green is provided on each surface of the window 2 corresponding to each region. A positive electrode 7 is provided near the window 2 as being supported by a supporting member 8 on the sealing plate 1b in each region 5 and a hot cathode 11 being arranged on the sealing plate 1b. An independent discharging space is formed in each region and each discharge-passing area 13 on discharge- controlling member 12.

CONSTITUTION:When a filament coil 4 is energized and the voltage is selectively applied to multiple anodes 15, a discharge occurs in the discharge spaces 7 of reflecting plates 5 between the filament coil 4 and the anodes 15 applied with the voltage. As a result of this discharge, the luminescent colors in response to phosphors 12, 13, 14 on the reflecting surfaces facing the discharge spaces 7 are outputted through the tip openings of the reflecting plates 5, and different luminescent colors in response to the anodes applied with the voltage can be obtained. Since a shielding plate 10 facing the base end side opening 9 of the reflecting plates 5 is arranged, the light leakage can be prevented.
