Abstract: A liquid ink printing apparatus printing images includes a printhead (20) having a plurality of nozzles (74) wherein a single power pulse causes two or more nozzles to eject ink simultaneously. The printhead includes an ink directing element (78) having a plurality of ink conduits coupled to an array of spaced nozzles and a transducer element (77) aligned with and mated to the ink directing element. The transducers are spaced a distance apart and each transducer is substantially aligned with at least two or more of the nozzles. The printhead is stepped in a direction transverse to the array of spaced nozzles a stepping distance approximately equal to or less than the distance between transducers. The ink directing element includes a silicon wafer having etched ink conduits or channels holding ink for ejection through the nozzles connected thereto. In one embodiment, each transducer is cooperatively associated with one channel having a fork member coupled to two or more nozzles or is cooperatively associated with two or more channels wherein each channel is connected to one or more nozzles.

Abstract: An ink jet printer includes a printhead (24) having a plurality of segments (24A,24B) each having ink ejecting nozzles, each segment supplied (26A,26B) with ink of a different characteristic. Means are provided for moving the printhead in a direction transverse to the advancing movement of a recording medium. Means (31) are further provided for moving the printhead between two or more positions along the recording medium advance direction. Thus, the printhead can print a swath of ink of a first characteristic from one segment and then be moved to print a second swath from a second segment with ink of a second characteristic. In one embodiment, a printhead has two segments, one printing in black, and the other in color. A shift mechanism (31) is enabled to move the printhead between a black print position and a color print position. The invention contemplates alternate color printing swaths at alternate printing positions along the same printing swath, or a combination thereof.

Abstract: A heater element for a printhead for an ink jet printing system has a pit layer (22) which protects the overglaze passivation layer (20), PSG step region (10), portions of the Ta layer (14) and dielectric isolation layer (12) and junctions or regions susceptible to the cavitational pressures. The inner walls (23) of the pit layer define the effective heater area and dopant lines (9) within the heater resistor (8) define the actual heater area. In an alternative arrangement, the dopant lines define both the actual and effective heater areas, and in yet another arrangement, one inner wall and one dopant line define the effective heater area. When a plurality of the heater elements are incorporated into a printhead having either full pit channel geometry and open pit channel geometry, the operating lifetime of the printhead is extended because the added protection of the pit layer prevents: 1) passivation damage and cavitational damages of the heater elements; and 2) degradation of heater robustness, hot spot formations and heater failures well into the 109 pulse range. The printhead can be incorporated into a drop-on-demand printing system of a carriage type or a full width type.

Abstract: An ink jet printhead is fabricated with a resistive temperature sensor formed adjacent to the heater resistors and, in a preferred embodiment, of the same material. Temperature sensing variations between a plurality of printheads used in the same printer is achieved by trimming the thermistors to the desired resistance value while holding the printhead at the nominal set temperature. In one embodiment, the heater resistor and thermistor are formed within the same polysilicon layer, and the resistor trimmed therein. In a second embodiment, a thick or thin film resistor is formed or bonded in series with the polysilicon thermistor with the trimming being accomplished at the thick, or thin film resistor.
